While emotional support persisted, they did take a big financial risk to make sure Woods continued playing. Looking at Woods’ words, it is clear that the 15-time major winner remains grateful for their sacrifices.
What was Tiger Woods’ first big purchase?
Woods started by speaking about having money, and his family was not sure if it was enough for him to go to a good college. “So my family made a tough decision, and at the age of 14 and a half, we took out a second mortgage so I could go out and play the AJGA Tour”.

His mother stayed at home, while his father, who passed away in 2006, traveled. Woods went on to play the tour on his second mortgage, hoping to make it big out of college. According to Woods, his father instilled his work ethic in him.
“Nothing ever going to be given to you,” Woods added. “Everything is going to be earned. If you don’t go out there and put in the work, you don’t put in the effort, one, you’re not gonna get the results. But two, more importantly, you don’t deserve it.”
Towards the end, Woods also mentioned who the CEOs of Nike and Titleist were at the time. After all, giving a big contract to a young pro is risky for the brand as well.
As a result, Woods’ ended up clearing the mortgage with his first cheque. “First thing I was able to do, I was able to pay off that mortgage”.
