In November, Tiger Woods made a much-awaited return to the course. He also cheerfully informed fans that he would be looking forward to competing in more events but would limit himself to one event per month. The ongoing 2024 Sentry doesn’t have Woods in the field, but his presence is still being felt!

The other players present in the field are reminiscing about the 15-time major champion. As the year’s first tournament goes on in full swing, the participants are mindful of Woods through the personal experiences they have had with him.

Jordan Spieth has also been vocal about how he gained his form back after playing at the Woods-hosted Hero World Challenge. He told the media, “Post-Ryder Cup, I tried to eye Tiger’s event as a chance to really get things where I felt really good about starting a season.” The Hero Challenge was a big event indeed that gave many golfers an experience of the upcoming season.

Spieth continued, “Tiger’s event was big for me, just to get out there and get into contention.” After that, he came to the Sentry and picked up where he left off. Intrestingly, the motivator himself has won the Sentry twice.

The 5x Masters champion has emerged victorious in Sentry in 1997 and 2000. At that time, the event was known as the Mercedes Championship. Not just Spieth, but Scottie Scheffler also paid a subtle tribute to the 15x major champion when he donned the Tiger Woods Nike shoes. Patrick Cantlay also spoke about one of the many moments he had with the goat.

Before the start of Sentry, Patrick Cantlay, who is playing at the event, shared a funny and memorable anecdote about when he was invited to Tiger Woods’s house. This incident took place two years ago, in 2021, when Cantlay had just won the PGA Tour Player of the Year. He was about to appear in the Ryder Cup and went to discuss it at Woods’ Jupiter Island, Florida, residence.

When Cantlay won the POY, he was graced with a little Jack Nicklaus bronze trophy. But when he went to Woods’s house, he found many of them in his basement. Cantlay explained, “So we’re walking through Tiger’s house, and we’re in the basement, and he’s got like, 11 of ’em lined up right next to each other, all in the corner of the basement.” Awed by this sight, Cantlay spoke, “Hey, I’m catching up,” to which Woods responded, “You got a lot of work to do.”
