Tiger Woods: Hero or liability for Team USA in the Presidents Cup? What's your take?

The Presidents Cup is less than a month away. While the best of the country will fly to Montreal for national glory, Tiger Woods’s name will be missing from that roster. Woods’s nine appearances is the second-highest for any American golfer. The 27.5 points (27-15-1) is also the second-best in the country. But a vast career has been filled with ups and downs. From crushing to defeat to iconic victories, here are some of the most memorable Tiger Woods moments from the Presidents Cup.

Mike Weir defeats Tiger Woods in 2007

Woods’s trip to Canada in 2007 didn’t yield the results he hoped for. Faced against hometown favorite, Mike Weir. The Canadian was the lowest-ranked player on the field for the International side. With the USA holding an insurmountable lead, the match could’ve gone in only one way. Or, so the world thought. Woods somewhat balanced his tumultuous start with four birdies in the back nine. He even went one-up before Weir tied on the 17th. In the final hole, Woods hit his shot in the water conceding a bogey. Weir, on the other hand, sealed the day with a par save handing the most upsetting finish in that edition.

Woods and Stricker’s historic defeat

When Woods and Steve Stricker went head to head against Adam Scott and K.J. Choi, there was no doubt who had the upper hand. The American duo were undefeated in the previous Presidents Cup. But times had changed; Scott and Choi fired off early in the day never letting Woods & Stricker catch a breath. Eventually, the match ended in the 12th hole, only for the second time in the Presidents Cup history. The 6&7 thrashing is the worst defeat in the Presidents Cup history and the worst for Woods in any match-play event.

2003 playoff against Ernie Else

The 2003 Presidents Cup is still one of the most thrilling editions in history. The highlight was a prime Tiger Woods going against the home favorite, Ernie Els. In the battle between World No. 1 and World No. 2, no one emerged victorious. In fading light, two of the world’s best dueled until their captains—Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player—had to take a call. They decided to hoist the trophy jointly as it was becoming too dark to see.

The one Justin Thomas celebration for the ages

Have an interesting take?

In the 2017 Presidents Cup, Tiger Woods and Justin Thomas tried to lead the charge as the team USA was vying for a much-needed comeback. Thomas was faced with a 17-footer in the 18th hole to win a crucial one point. As Woods, his partner for that session, stood close by Thomas nailed the putt. Woods dropped the putter as did Justin Thomas before hugging, chest-bumping, and offering fans one of the most memorable celebrations in team golf.

That one Abraham Ancer handshake with Tiger Woods

Before the 2019 Presidents Cup, Abraham Ancer was asked who he would want to play against. Tiger Woods would be great was his short response. It was out of reverence, but what came out after the translation – he responded in Spanish – was out of cockiness. Woods dusted the Mexican International 3 & 2, and then a short handshake followed. The clip is arguably the most viral one about the Presidents Cup. But Woods didn’t shake hands before the putt was cupped; that was morphed.

The famed Tiger Woods club twirls

Woods is famous for his multiple signature celebrations. But his club twirl at the Presidents Cup was as unique and memorable as it could be. After Stricker’s drive in the alternate-shot match, Woods was faced with a 229-yard approach. The former world no.1 hit a perfect 3-iron. As the ball soared up Woods twirled his club and started walking. All the while holding his hands in that position. Everyone knew where it would end up, and the ball did stop close to the pin.
