Thriston Lawrence is a different player on his home patch. Two of his four European Tour wins have come in his home country, and the South African golfer is currently leading the Joburg Open after the first round. He hit eight-under-par 62 to be ahead by three shots.

The Joburg Open is an event on the DP World Tour and Lawrence has won it earlier, in 2021. Last year, he annexed the Investec South African Open Championship. He also won the Omega European Masters in 2022 and emerged victorious at the 2023 BMW International Open. But what does he carry in his bag?

Being a Ping staff player, it’s expected that Lawrence has the drivers from the brand in his bag. Ping G430 Max with 10.5 degrees loft has been his favorite. The shaft attached to the driver is Mitsubishi Chemical Tensei 1K Blue 80 TX. A Ping G430 Max custom driver is priced around $600 in the market.

Lawrence uses a 5-wood; yet again a G430 Max with 18 degrees loft, fitted with a Mitsubishi Chemical Diamana shaft. It’s available in the market at around $330. Also, this fairway wood is considered one of the best in business.

Moving to irons, Lawrence’s choices are Ping i230 (four-iron to five-iron) and Ping iBlade (six-iron). A Ping i230 costs between $1,125 and $1,300 in the market, while a Ping iBlade (6-PW) is available at $397.

Lawrence uses Ping Glide 4.0 wedges, of three varieties – 50 degrees S Grind, 54 degrees S Grind and 60 degrees T Grind. The shafts fixed to them are True Temper Dynamic Gold Tour Issue X100. Wedges help spin the ball and the golfers are very choosy about them. The market price of this varies from $130 to $175.

Fond of his putter

Lawrence’s putter is Ping PLD Oslo 4 Prototype, while he plays the Titleist Pro V1 ball. The 26-year-old is said to be fond of his putter, which is priced around $450. A Titleist Pro V1 ball is available at $55. As far as the golf ball is concerned, this brand is one of the most used in the circuit.
