Texas golf is in full swing as the PGA Tour kicks off its two-week stretch in the Lone Star State at the Texas Children’s Houston Open. But the first round didn’t go as planned—darkness forced play to be suspended at 7:28 p.m. CT, leaving four players tied at the top at 5-under. Stephan Jaeger, last year’s champion, opened with an even-par 70 at the very place where he edged out Scottie Scheffler in a dramatic finish.

Meanwhile, Scheffler—still chasing his first win of the season—sits two shots back at 3-under, eager to flip the script this time around. And let’s not forget Rory McIlroy, fresh off his second PLAYERS Championship victory, battling his way through an even-par opening round. Well, looks like there is finally an update on the continuation of the first round.

As tweeted by the official X account of the PGA Tour, “The first round of the Texas Children’s Houston Open will resume Friday at 8:30 a.m. CT and the second round will begin as scheduled at 7:20 a.m.” This is not the first time there has been a suspension on the Tour, and we all know it, weather is not the only problem disrupting the events.

The PGA Tour was criticed over slow play, with delays disrupting the high-stakes $25 million PLAYERS Championship. Frustration is mounting among both players and fans, who are calling for urgent measures to address the issue. Rory McIlroy previously described slow play as “an epidemic” during the Farmers Insurance Open, a concern echoed by broadcaster Dottie Pepper, who emphasized the need for “respect” in the game—for players, fans, and broadcasters alike. The issue resurfaced at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, where Tom Kim’s deliberate pace drew criticism.

Things worsened at the Waste Management Phoenix Open, where play had to be stopped due to darkness. Many pointed out that the delay wasn’t caused by sunset but by the sluggish pace of the tournament. The frustration peaked at the PLAYERS Championship when darkness once again forced a suspension of the first round, leaving players like Max McGreevy and Ryan Gerard unable to finish their rounds until the following day.

Delays in the PGA Tour events have become a common norm, and end up leaving fans frustrated. And this time was no different.

With delays becoming the norm, is the PGA Tour losing its edge to LIV's rising momentum?

The Golf Community was left frustrated with yet another PGA Tour setback

LIV Golf has been working to establish itself as a true competitor to the PGA Tour, but the challenge remains significant. New CEO Scott O’Neil acknowledged the league’s struggle to capture mainstream attention, particularly in the U.S., where TV ratings have lagged behind expectations. O’Neil highlighted the difficulties of hosting events across different time zones, making it harder to build a consistent audience.

While LIV is exploring new strategies to boost its presence, the PGA Tour remains the dominant force in professional golf. Taking to this, one of them commented, “This is embarrassing. If LIV ever gets its shit together you guys are screwed.” While another displayed pure disgust for the PGA Tour and its recent activities. They wrote, “You can’t make this shit up anymore. Such a joke of a product”.

Also first things first, you can notice that the post states the opening round will be continued on Friday from 8:30 am, and the second round will commence at its scheduled time. How is it even possible for round 2 to begin before the first round concludes? Must have been an error. But imagine an error like this coming from the official source of the PGA Tour. No wonder the fans bashed it. They left comments like, “The second round is going to start before the first round?” While another out of sheer curiosity, simply wrote, “How?”

The weather conditions have been the greatest villain in the story of the PGA Tour. And well by now, the fans are almost surprised when an event concludes without any disruptions. How would they not be? If you take January 2025 for example. A total of five events were hosted in the opening month, out of which three events: Sony Open, Farmers Insurance Open, and the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am rounds were suspended. Taking to this, one of them commented, Every PGAT event – the same post”.
