For the first time in golf history, two rival Tour players will be playing at the 87th Masters Tournament. Most fans expected that there would be immense heat and disregard between the players of the LIV Golf League and the PGA Tour. But nothing of that sort happened. However, a LIV golfer recently fired shots against the Saudi-backed circuit. The pro reportedly signed for $15 million to join LIV, and now he has brought the apparent facts to light. His latest comments are making rounds on the internet, and the golf world seems divided.

The LIV golfer comes clean about the Tour’s intentions

Harold Varner III highlighted bitter facts in an interview with the Washington Post about the company’s CEO Greg Norman and his drive to “grow the game.” Varner has been open about the reason behind his switch to the Saudi-backed circuit, and it was always financial. His wish was to build generational wealth, as he told Kent Babb of the Post. Varner said that the circuit’s stated goals for improving the game are just a pretense but not the truth.

They’re full of s—; they’re growing their pockets,” the golfer said of his fellow LIV players who toe the company line. “I tell them all the time, all of them: You didn’t come here to f—ing grow the f—ing game.” These revelations could not have come at a worse moment. Recently, Norman revealed the mischievous plans of the players to celebrate at the finish line of the 18th green if any LIV golfer wins the green jacket. It did get the fans pumped, and Brooks Koepka agreed. But after Varner’s comments, the fans will probably have a different perception.

According to the LIV golfer, when he first switched from the PGA Tour, the LIV Tour’s RP office sent him the same bullet points as all the other League players in August 2022. However, he was one of those golfers who did not pay heed. Instead, he posted on his Instagram account that it was simply “too good of a financial breakthrough.” During his interview with the Post, he provided a reaffirmation of that. “I play golf so I can change the direction of my family’s life. And that’s it. No other reason.”

Varner’s comments divided the golf world

Golf Digest posted his comments on Instagram. After the post went viral, a fan agreed with Varner but also asked a question. He said, “I get what he’s saying but at the same time, isn’t being a professional golfer, as a profession, as with any profession, about making money?” Another fan commented that most defectors admitted to it, “Almost all of the guys have already said they went for the money and schedule.” One fan commented, “I respect HV3 more than I did before now,” and another with a bit of contradiction. “Why trash talking like that? Speaking the truth is a thing and trash talking just exposes the low level tbh.”

However, a few comments really urged everyone to think again. “Wait… really?? Is anyone surprised by this? That was the ONLY reason to go to LIV.” He added, “Anyone saying it was to grow the game was either lying or didn’t get the guaranteed money and fell in love with the fantasy of what LIV was going to be. I have a horse for sale out back that I promise isn’t dead.” Many LIV players have given reasons like family time and more rest as the reason for switching.

A supportive comment clarifying doubts said, “People in these comment don’t realize this is from a guy that plays on LIV and does it for the money, just doesn’t try to act like he’s out to “grow the game.” The “snowflake” comments were further supported, “See, now at least I respect this. Call it what it is. They don’t give no f***s about the game and bettering it. It was all about the benjis and that’s cool but own it.”
