The PGA Tour kickstarted its 2025 season with the first Signature event, The Sentry in Hawaii. Top players like Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy are not a part of the field, nonetheless, with competitive players like Xander Schauffele, Collin Morikawa, and others in the field, it is exciting. Additionally, it also has a rather elevated purse of a whopping $20 million. Yet, it has failed to garner the required attention of the golf world.

Last year, Chris Kirk bagged the trophy at the Sentry, gaining 700 FedEx Cup points and taking home a staggering $3.6 million. But his score was not really a satisfying one. After the four rounds, he carded only a 29-under, leaving Sahith Theegala behind by just one stroke. Shane Lowry is one of those players who does not wish to waste his time in a tournament that scores so low.

Dan Rappaport took to his official X account and shared the screenshot of a leaderboard from in between the Friday match, and well, Hideki Matsuyama was leading but was at only 16-under after 36 holes. Taking to this, he reported, “The Sentry leaderboard today reminds me of Shane Lowry telling me why he skips Kapalua: “Me, coming off the holidays in Ireland, flying 25 hours, needing to shoot 30-under? No, I don’t think so.”

As it turns out, just like Shane Lowry, even the golf world is not very satisfied with The Sentry.

Hawaii’s weather is tropical, meaning it can be hot, humid, and prone to sudden rain showers. This can make playing conditions uncomfortable for some, especially during the summer months. The trade winds, while generally pleasant, can also make the game more challenging by affecting ball flight and adding wind-related difficulties. This makes getting through the entire game a rather difficult task. Taking to this, one of them wrote, “I mean that and the fact he would have to wear SPF 1000 to survive.”

What’s your perspective on:

Is The Sentry's $20 million purse enough to make up for its lack of excitement?

Have an interesting take?

And another taking to Shane Lowry’s comment wrote, “Sounds like a smart lad.” While one of them simply wrote, “Lol he has a point”.

Shane Lowry might have only three PGA Tour victories, but top professional golfers like him can generate substantial income beyond tournament earnings. He bagged a win at the 2019 Open Championship and has established a lucrative career not just through his on-course performance but through endorsements and sponsorships. For example, in 2019, he signed a multi-year deal with Titleist for equipment and has had long-standing partnerships with brands like KPMG and Adidas. A professional golfer at his level can earn millions from endorsement deals alone. Taking to this, one of them even wrote, “He could shoot 90 every day, chill in Hawaii, and still make $250k”.

Unlike other years, this year’s weather at the Kapalua resort seems to be rather calming. Weather has been reportedly clear, except for Saturday, which predicts a 45% chance of rain, and only a 9% chance of thunderstorms. Nonetheless, it has been bearable. Taking to this, one of them even stated, “There is absolutely no wind this weekend, which is a rarity. No wind no teeth to the course. Someone will shoot 30 under. But guess what… it’s freaking paradise!”
