The PGA Tour kicks off the 2025 calendar year in Hawaii at Kapalua’s iconic Plantation Course for The Sentry. Most of the circuit’s biggest stars are in the field, with notable exceptions: World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, recovering from hand surgery after an injury on Christmas Day, and World No. 3 Rory McIlroy, who traditionally starts his season in Dubai on the DP World Tour.
Fellow Ryder Cup teammates Tommy Fleetwood and Shane Lowry also sit this out. But players like Xander Schauffele, Justin Thomas, Collin Morikawa, Ludvig Aberg, and more are battling it out. The first day’s play was unexpected with Tom Hoge and Will Zalatoris taking charge at T1 and T2. The game is truly on, but for what are the golfers going head to head?

The winner of the first signature event on the PGA Tour will also earn 700 FedEx Cup points and 52.9 OWGR points. Additionally, they will also get a two-year exemption on the Tour and an exemption for the 2026 Masters, PGA Championship, and The PLAYERS. However, winning in Hawaii is not as easy as it seems.
Justin Thomas is looking for his third win on The Sentry 2025
Justin Thomas is the only two-time champion in the field, with victories in 2017 and 2020. In 2017, just a year after his debut in the event, he managed to score an impressive 22-under and clinched the trophy. Daniel Chopra, the 2008 winner, is still the only player who won the tournament in their debut year, proving that experience on Kapalua’s challenging layout matters. Thomas bagged his second victory in 2020, posting 14-under, the highest total since 2006, and triumphed in a thrilling three-way playoff.
This marks his ninth appearance at the event. Oh, and Thomas has also finished third twice. His worst finish came in 2023, a T25, and he did not qualify for the 2024 tournament. Do you think 2025 will be his year of luck, and the American professional will be able to grab his third Sentry title? Stay tuned to find out!
