The much-awaited Ryder Cup picks by the US team captain, Zach Johnson, came with a lot of controversy from the golf community. As Justin Thomas came to be picked by the skipper, overlooking other players, the golf world responded with mixed feedback, leaning slightly towards a disagreement of sorts due to the rough year that the golfer experienced.

Meanwhile, as Thomas was on the receiving end of both such criticism and praise, he couldn’t help but look back at the time around the crucial decision taken by Johnson. Knowing that he could only wait at that time, the golfer revealed his “brutal” experience with the selection surprising many in the golf world!

Justin Thomas opens up about his Ryder Cup selection

Thomas had a bumpy year of sorts with zero wins in 2023. Thus, according to many golf enthusiasts, he had little or no hope of getting selected for the biennial event. Nevertheless, he came to be selected, and in an interview at the Fortinet Championship that ended not too long ago, he shared his experience during the time he spent waiting for the skipper’s decision.

Reflecting on the last couple of months, the American golfer explained how “it was brutal” waiting for Johnson to declare his picks. Recounting how he felt while conversing with the Ryder Cup captain, the fifteen-time PGA Tour winner mentioned how he compared the same to when one “had an ex-girlfriend that you were trying to find any excuse you could, to reach out to them to get in contact.”

Continuing with his response, the professional described how tough it was when he “literally couldn’t do anything about it.” Everyone else had the opportunity to solidify their position in the team, unlike Thomas who had to sit at home. But nevertheless, the two-time major champ pointed out how all the tension is what made the call to the team that much exciting and comforting.

Meanwhile, the skipper’s choice led to a lot of protests as they argued that the decision to include Thomas was wrong on all fronts. But many in the community, including a golfing legend were quick to support the golfer.

Lee Trevino and his support for JT

The 83-year-old ex-pro-golfer was talking about the biennial event on A New Breed of Golf with Michael Breed when he mentioned how Thomas was picked over Lucas Glover since he had more experience. Perhaps less convincingly, his on-field affinity towards Jordan Spieth also became a major reason for his being chosen for the upcoming event.

Adding to his reasons, Trevino went ahead to point out how the 2017 PGA Championship winner had a stellar career to his name including his wins on the PGA Tour, which add up to 15. The record that he has garnered till now was ample reason to get him selected for the tournament.
