It won’t be the first time TPC Sawgrass has faced weather issues during the prestigious event. So, can the last round of THE PLAYERS Championship 2025 get suspended? The second round of the tournament was canceled in 2024 due to darkness. It caused enough issues for the pros who were trying to make the cut for the weekend leg. This year, the first two rounds at The Players 2025 saw perfect golfing weather—mild temps, light winds, and birdies raining down. Unseasoned players rode the calm to the top at 11-under, but the weekend’s forecast is brewing trouble.
Sunday’s weather could concern golfers this year too. At least that is what Lav of the Golf Channel’s Rex & Lav reported after speaking to the local meteorologist, Steve Borkowski. Borkowski believes that there will be “30 miles an hour gust over the weekend, some storms on Sunday as well.” And other reports also seem to suggest the same.
GolfWeek also shared the same report. In fact, they give a detailed overview of the weather conditions for the final round. Here’s what they have shared: “Partly cloudy early, cloudy later, high 80, low 67. Wind from the S 15-25 mph with gusts up to 30 mph, 70 percent chance of rain.” That is exactly what AccuWeather also tells us. As per the weather forecasting company, the temperature can rise up to 80° with a strong wind at about 27 mph. There is a 90% probability of precipitation and an 82% chance of thunderstorms. On a positive note, the rain is only predicted to last for an hour. The wind speed drops to 20 mph towards the evening with humidity going down to 76%.

Interestingly, Billy Horschel also gave a glimpse of the conditions directly from the course. Playing at the TPC Sawgrass for the last couple of rounds, Golf.com posted Horschel’s quote about the weather that read “The wind we’re projected to have the next two days is going to be one helluva challenge.” Dealing with 27 mph wind and rainfall might affect a lot of players. In fact, fans can also expect the entire leaderboard to get shaken up by the time the tournament ends.

THE PLAYERS Championship 2025: Battling the gust
Some of the biggest names missed the cut for the weekend leg of the event. The list includes Hideki Matsuyama, Ludvig Aberg, Max Homa, Viktor Hovland, and many other pros. Fortunately, they won’t have to face the challenging weather conditions in the final round of the tournament. THE PLAYERS Championship 2025 has seen the likes of Rory McIlroy, Collin Morikawa, Min Woo Lee, and Justin Thomas dominate the field.
Going into the final round, each of these players, along with everyone else at the top of the leaderboard, will face the toughest obstacle they have come across so far at TPC Sawgrass. During the first few rounds, the course was already a bit soft despite getting ample sunlight and very little moisture. Now they will have to battle rain and the strong winds that will change the direction of the ball. Every drive will need to be perfectly calculated and they can’t expect the putts to roll over the greens that easily. In such conditions, holes 17 and 18 will be even more troublesome as players rely on the dryness of the grass to allow the ball to sink.

Hence, it won’t come as a surprise if neither of the players mentioned above end at the top of the table. Experienced players like Rory McIlroy and Justin Thomas may rely on their experience to push through. Even Collin Morikawa will be able to pull something out of the bag and compete for the title. But relatively inexperienced golfers like Min Woo Lee and Akshay Bhatia may face some issues on the final day.
Then again, it’s hard to predict who will stand out when tough weather conditions come into the picture. Who do you think will dominate the field in the rain-struck final round of THE PLAYERS Championship 2025? Share your views in the comments section.
