As the golf world gears up for the 2024 Open Championship, golf legend John Daly also prepares for it along with the upcoming tournaments despite his injuries. The two-time major winner has been struggling with injuries for the past five years, but that is just not enough to shake the love he has for the sport. With fans excited to see Daly in his colorful clothes rule the greens of the Royal Troon, the question on everyone’s mind is: can Daly win the 2024 British Open despite his physical setbacks? Let’s hear from the golfer himself.

In an interview with the Press And Journal, the golfer described the injuries he faced in the past years, which led to his withdrawing from some of the important tournaments. I’m just enjoying my golf right now. I have had surgeries on both knees and issues with the shoulders, the elbows, the back,” said Daly. The golfer has suffered enough surgeries to make him drop the game as a whole, for instance, Daly recently had to withdraw from the 2024 PGA Championship because of a thumb injury after finishing an 11-over 82. 

“It has been tough for the last four or five years, but to go over and play is important to me,”  he continued. His determination for the sport is setting an example for all young golfers. The 58-year-old golfer shared his plans for the future with the fans as well, and by the looks of it, the greens are going to see a lot more of Daly than anyone would’ve thought.

“I want to relish the opportunities I still have, even if I’m not giving myself a great shot at doing well. A great goal would be to make the cut at Troon and play really well at Carnoustie. And then hopefully play great in Aberdeen,”  said the golfer. Daly then reflected on his past win at the Open Championship, and as it appears, the golfer really loves the tournament.

John Daly on his win at the 1995 Open

The second turning point in Daly’s career was the 1995 Open championship. this happened 4 years after his 1991 PGA Championship. John Daly competed with Costantino Rocca in a playoff and finished at six under par. This victory marked an important milestone in Daly’s career, as it was his first win at the Open. Daly reflected on his win and said,I fell in love with the course, and it meant when I went back for the British Open in 1995 I had confidence and good vibes”.

According to the golfer, he loves Scottish golf and the challenges that come with the fascinating links courses. “I loved links golf since my first British Open at Muirfield in 1992”. He also shared his love for the St. Andrews golf course, in Scotland, which offered him his first Open win. And he was not shy about expressing his feelings for the course, “St Andrews became one of my favorite golf courses so I was excited to go back there for the British Open.”
