Bryson DeChambeau's 'incalculatable' blunder—Is he losing his edge or just having a bad day?

Golf star Bryson DeChambeau’s start at Royal Troon got off to a disastrous start, leaving fans stunned. What started as a very mediocre performance soon transpired into a post-round press conference embarrassment. This happened when he tried to correct a reporter’s question, only to realize he was wrong himself. Let’s take a closer look at the incident that left everyone scratching their heads and wondering if his woes were truly ‘incalculable.’

Golf.com on its X handle shared a clip, featuring DeChambeau in his post-round press conference. When asked, “With so many calculations going through your mind, what about things that seem incalculable?”—a nod to DeChambeau’s reputation as a Scientist on the golf course—he responded with “incalculatable,” leaving the reporter and social media users stunned.

The 2024 US Open winner’s shaky start in the first round of the final major was overshadowed by his cringe-worthy attempt to correct the reporter. Fans quickly pounced on the mistake, flooding social media with memes and jokes ridiculing the golfer’s hubris. He carded a 76 in the first round, 5 over par, finishing in a disappointing tie for 102nd place.

To make matters worse, the 2x US Open champ was aiming to secure his second major win of the season, but his performance in round one has jeopardized that goal. His struggles on the course, combined with his awkward attempt to correct the reporter, have raised questions about his preparedness and focus.

As he looks to bounce back in round two, he’ll need to regroup and refocus if he hopes to salvage his Open dreams. But before that, let’s delve into how fans reacted to DeChambeau’s cringe-worthy moment, which sparked a frenzy of memes and jokes on social media.

Have an interesting take?

Bryson DeChambeau’s behavior, personality, and performance have sparked a range of reactions from fans, with some criticizing his twitchy behavior, saying, “Why is he bugging out like this with all the twitchy random sniffling?” As a self-described “scientist” of golf, he’s known for his meticulous approach and attention to detail. However, this trait might also make him more prone to anxiety and stress in high-pressure situations. His behavior can be contrasted with that of other golfers known for their calm demeanor under pressure, such as Tiger Woods. Despite the immense pressure, Woods often remained composed, showcasing the importance of mental fortitude in professional golf. To which another user commented, “He looks gutted” when things don’t go his way.

Others have poked fun at his perceived limitations, joking that “Translation: ‘I can only play in perfect weather conditions” and that “He couldn’t do it on a cold and wet windy night in Summerhill par 3”. These comments highlighted his limits in challenging weather conditions. Some years ago, Phil Mickelson opened up about his strategy to counter cold weather conditions. He told Golf Digest that he changed to softer, lower-compression balls as they tend to compress easily and travel in a straight trajectory. Lefty’s approach demonstrates the importance of adaptability in professional golf, but it seems DeChambeau only seems to rely on science.

Some golf fans criticized him for being condescending and arrogant; one explained, “Like water finding its level, Bryson is reverting back to being a condescending narcissist.” Known for being a man of the people, DeChambeau has shown lately how much he loves his fans. He would be playful with them and bet his socks, and would also fight righteously to get back the golf ball. However, it was not always like this. There was once a point when he was known for being a know-it-all golfer who had quite an attitude, and per this fan, he is going back in that direction.

One user emphasized his performance; he said, “Sounds like he wasn’t prepared” to admit when he’s played poorly, and “Why is it so difficult to just simply admit ‘I played poorly today’?”This year at the majors, if there is one thing that DeChambeau has shown, it is consistency. But all of it went haywire at The Open’s first day. This fan pointed out that even the golfer himself was not prepared for this start after his stunning run this season.

Additionally, some fans have noted that DeChambeau’s decision to join the LIV Golf means he only competes in a limited number of events each year that is 4 majors, and 14 LIV GOlf events. This leads to comments like “He’s the worst and the only reason ppl dont hate him anymore is because they only have to see him on TV 4x a year.” Taking a dig at how people don’t see live broadcast of LIV, this fan pointed that people only like the 2x US Open winner a little bit because they only have to see him four times a year on TV when he plays in majors.

Do you seem to agree with fans too or do you hold a different opinion on DeChambeau’s grammar nazi attitude? Let us know in the comments below.
