26 Years Later, Handsome $64,124 Price Tag Placed on Tiger Woods’ Historic Memorabilia

Last week ended on a high note for the golf world. The ever-eventful Master Tournament ended on Sunday, leaving the fans exhilarated by the results. But the drama-filled Augusta event of last week isn’t the only Masters Tournament being talked about currently. The Masters of 1997 have also been the talk of the town this week. The reason: the sale of historic memorabilia belonging to Tiger Woods from the event where the golf legend won his first major!

The iconic Tiger Woods memento fetches thousands of dollars

In 1997, the 15-time major winner made history with his iconic Augusta win. With his first major championship win, the golf pro made history by becoming the youngest player to win the Masters at 21 years old. During the final round of that event, Woods handed over the golf ball he was playing with to a young fan, Julian Nexsen, thrilling him. And now that same ball has seen yet another win!

Nexsen was 9 at the time, and now in his late 30s, the golf fan put up the Woods memorabilia for auction. Despite it being 26 years since the ball saw a course, its value has certainly only risen. Golden Age Auctions, the auction house that was handling the sale of the historic ball, recently announced that it had been sold.

The Titleist ball had ‘Tiger’ stamped on it, and its bidding started at $500 and sold for a whopping $64,124. Its authenticity was determined by the “dozens of people” who witnessed the golf pro hand over his ball to Nexsen on Sunday, 1997. Moreover, the golf enthusiast signed a legal declaration claiming that the golf ball was indeed authentic.

Woods’ golf ball may just be one of a kind

The golf pro, of course, has had lots of rare mementos auctioned off over the years. But this may be special! The golf ball may be the only one that remains from the golf legend’s iconic 12-stroke win that year. “Unless Tiger himself or his caddie Fluff intentionally saved a ball from this historic final round (which we doubt), this may be the only confirmed golf ball from the final round of Tiger Woods’ first major championship victory,” said Golden Age Auctions. Perhaps that justifies its whopping high price!

Surprisingly, this wasn’t even Woods’ highest-priced golf ball ever sold. A ball from Woods’ 1996 professional debut that was sold last year in November holds that record. The 15-time major winner had holed an ace with that same ball during the event. Heritage Auction stated that the ball sold for a record $186,000.
