The Masters has already gotten all golf fans sticking to their screens to watch the tournament live. And with so much already going on at Augusta National, LIV Golf defector Brooks Koepka has found himself in the headlines. Surprisingly, it wasn’t because of Koepka himself, but his caddie. And the issue was serious enough for the officials to revisit the case after the second round.

Augusta National reviews the Brooks Koepka controversy once again

Koepka, 32, has been absolutely dominating the 2023 Masters tournament with his unmatchable swings on the course. With former world no. 1 Jon Rahm right behind him, the golfer has really high hopes to claim the title this year. However, his potential victory could have been stained yesterday after he made it to the news over his controversial first round.

For those who missed out on what happened, witnesses on Thursday saw Koepka’s caddie, Ricky Elliott, mouthing information about his golfer’s club to Brendan “Butchy” Little, who is caddying for Gary Woodland. In fact, fans and officials saw videos of Koepka allegedly flashing five fingers in Woodland’s direction after Elliott was seen verbally speaking about the player using a five iron.

Although caddies are allowed to flash such signals to television personnel for later use, they are not permitted to provide that information to another player or his caddie. And if they do, it can result in a two-stroke penalty for violation of Rule 10-2s. Looking at the seriousness of the matter, Augusta National decided to question Koepka about the 15th-hole incident on Friday after his round.

“I’m taking my glove off. The last thing I’m going to do is give it to Gary Woodland, the U.S. Open champ.” the LIV rebel said. “And the funny part about it is I think if he would have known we were hitting 5, he would have hit 6 because I don’t think Gary is that short and he’s 10 in front of me, 12 in front of me.”

Similarly, Woodland also denied the fact that he had any information, as per SI, about Koepka’s 5-iron. In fact, he also mentioned that he would have used a 6-iron if he had known about his fellow player using a 5. According to Woodland, neither he nor his caddie knew about the golfer’s club choice on 15. But despite all their claims, fans are still in doubt after watching the video feed.

Did Augusta National give Koepka the expected penalty?

There are tons of speculations about the entire squabble right now. And notably, Koepka is under a lot of pressure due to the criticism he is receiving for his potential penalty. However, as per the rules, both players could be penalized by the committee if they chose to violate any rules.

On the contrary, the Masters committee released a statement on Thursday which stated that “there was no breach of the rules” by either of the players. “All involved were adamant that no advice was given or requested”. Thankfully, the golfer is currently out of risk and is confidently leading the field at the $15,000,000 mega-tournament.
