In the upcoming Masters Tournament, 18 LIV Golfers are invited to play at Augusta National for the first time. And Fred Couples, being a PGA Tour loyalist, has not shied away from expressing his opinion on the golfers who have left the PGA Tour and joined the rival tour. Less than a month ago, Couples called Phil Mickelson a “nutbag” and Sergio Garcia, a “clown”. Both of these players are former Masters Champions. Now, Couples say that he would not want the PGA Tour to be bashed at any cost by anyone.

Fred Couples against bashing of the PGA Tour

On Monday, post a nine-hole practice round at Augusta National, Couples was asked by a reporter about his expectations from Champions Dinner. To which he replied wittily replied, “For food?”

The 1992 Masters Champion also addressed the remarks he made about the former champions. He said, “I have no problem with any of them, just please do not bash a tour that I have 43 years invested in. It bothers the hell out of me.”

He mentioned that he has nothing personal against any of the LIV defectors but he would be picking a bone with anyone who would bash the PGA Tour.

Couples was ready to talk to the LIV Golfers if they felt wrong about anything he had said. “No, if one wants to stop and ask why I’m picking on them, then I’m all for it,” he spoke. “But I don’t really think I’ve done anything horrific. They’re making comments, and I’m replying to them. That’s it.”

Couples would love to be paired with this LIV Golfer!

Irnonically, following Couples’ “nutbag” remark, Couples, when asked about who he wants to be paired with, he said, “People have asked me are you going to get paired … I’m like, I would love to be paired with Phil,”. Couples thinks that Phil is one of the greatest players to ever play the sport and simply adores the kind of game he plays. “I mean, he’s one of the best players that ever played. He loves this place as much as I do, and if we did, we’d look at each other on the first hole and we’d have a good time.”

It’s hard to disagree with Couples on the fact that it is hard for him to see players bashing the reputed PGA Tour. His connection with the sport and PGA Tour is too close to him. Would you like to see Couples and Mickelson paired up? Let us know your thoughts in the comments down below.
