Rory McIlroy’s Thursday started on a neutral note, but his whole game was reversed on Friday. Rory encountered a series of setbacks during the first 11 holes of his game, with five bogeys, one of which occurred on the supposedly easy par-5 2nd hole. As a result, his chances of winning the tournament went from highly unlikely to completely impossible. At this point, he was trailing Brooks Koepka, who was expected to be the leader after the second day, by a massive 17 strokes.
Despite managing to birdie the two par 5s on the back nine, Rory’s efforts were in vain as he bogeyed two of the last three holes. On the 16th, he missed a good chance to score an eagle, and his subsequent bogey sealed his fate.
Tiger Woods’ validation for McIlroy
In the recent interview prior to Masters, Woods was questioned about McIlroy and his advice to the young player. To which, the 15-times Major champion replied, “Well, he will, it’s just a matter of time. Rory has the talent, he has a game, he has all the tools to win here. It’s just a matter of time”. “I think Rory has shown over the years that he has learned how to play this golf course”, said Woods.
