Along with the enticing level of golf, the field of Augusta National was also paid a visit with heavy rainfall. Tiger Woods, who merely made the cut, was having one of his worst back nine holes at the Masters. The terrifying weather conditions not only did harm Woods’ playing style but also ended up affecting his decades-long mentality which he had adopted from his late father.
With one under par in the second round, Tiger joined the history books along with Gary Player and Fred Couples for most consecutive cuts (23) made at the Masters. Following his big feat, fans were excited to watch two more days of Woods’ masterclass at Augusta National.
However, the ominous weather ruined the third round, as the play was suspended. Though the 5-time Green Jacket winner bogeyed and double-bogeyed twice each in the first seven holes, it was his usage of an umbrella that stunned many.

The Woods family doesn’t use an umbrella
Tiger has been in the sport for nearly three decades. However, in those 27 years, Woods has rarely used an umbrella during a rainy round of golf, nor has he worn a rain jacket. This unique mindset was instilled into the 15-time Major winner by his Army veteran father.
While speaking to GOLFTV in 2022, Woods said, “Personally, if you ever see me under an umbrella, you know it must be hosing down, right”. He added about feeling ‘sensitive’ while carrying an umbrella. Tiger then disclosed the words Earl Woods used to share with him by saying, “Once you’re wet you’re wet deal with it. You only get wet once”.
Though Tiger wasn’t on the same page as his father initially, Earl motivated his future Hall of Famer son with a military mindset similar to his. Tiger Woods adhered to his late father’s words throughout his career. However, at the 2023 Masters, the rain finally got the better of the 47-year-old. With constant drizzle at Augusta National, Woods was spotted with an umbrella above his head.
While it may not be that big of a deal, it sure shows disheartening signs of Tiger’s end days on the professional circuit. However, for the concerned fans, the 15-time Major winner reinstated hope by displaying his elite mindset.
Soaking Tiger Woods walks off without an umbrella
Though Woods was snapped with an umbrella during his third as well as second round, he did show his commitment to his father’s words while walking to the 18th hole in the second round earlier on Saturday morning.
Tiger was the ONLY guy who didn't use an umbrella walking up 18 this morning…
My guess: Wasn't sure about the cut line, wanted fans who stuck it out to get a clean picture of him as he made his way…👑🐅 @TigerWoods @TheMasters pic.twitter.com/ldrhWb2f1p— Tewy (@Tewy_C) April 8, 2023

While everyone else on the field required a shade above their head, Tiger walked off soaking wet. Moreover, not even the injured right knee stopped the 47-year-old from seeking assistance.
Though he may not have the same golfing attributes as he once did, Woods sure does have the same passion for his father’s wise words. Perhaps he can further display them when he returns to the field tomorrow at Augusta National.
