With every passing second, the 87th Masters Tournament is drawing ever closer. The golfers are touching down in Augusta and engaging in practice sessions on their own or on the Augusta National Golf Course if they have won a Green Jacket. While winning the Masters is huge for any golfer, successfully defending the title will propel them into the stratosphere. 2022 Masters winner, Scottie Scheffler, will look to do just that and join the likes of Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo, and Tiger Woods are the only golfers to have won the fabled Green Jacket in back-to-back years.

Ahead of the event, the 26-year-old tried to divert the focus off himself by seemingly playing down his position as the defending champion.

Scottie Scheffler made an unexpected confession ahead of Masters

The Masters has had a dearth of defending champions despite being played on the same course annually and having the smallest field of the four majors. It’s also not precisely common for reigning champions to have a chance to win consecutive tournaments; in recent years, 2015 winner Jordan Spieth has come the closest. He had a collapse on the final day in 2016. It will now fall on Scottie Scheffler to become the first back-to-back winner.

Despite being the previous winner, Scottie Scheffler’s approach is going to be different this year. In a teleconference, he said, “So, as I’m approaching the Masters, I’m not going to think of myself as the defending champion, I’m just going to go out there like I usually do and try and execute shots and play good solid rounds of golf.

He believes that winning one major title is already hard and winning two is going to be a challenge, but he did say that he would love to defend his crown. However, that will not be on Scheffler’s mind when he takes to Tea Olive on Thursday as he knows he will begin the day on the same score as every other golfer.

The world no.1 said, “I’m going to be thinking about hitting the fairway and trying to hit the green. Everybody starts at even par. Doesn’t matter if I’m defending champion or not, they don’t give me any shots.”

Being the defending champion, Scottie Scheffler had one official task before the masters, i.e. deciding the menu for this year’s Masters Champions Dinner.

Paige Spiranac was convinced that Scottie Scheffler’s menu would be ‘boring.’ She even predicted his menu, and surprisingly, she got it right! Well, except for one part. Last year, shortly after Scheffler won the Masters by defeating Rory McIlroy by three strokes, Spiranac dissed the winner on her show Playing a Round with Paige.

She claimed, “I think that his champions dinner next year is going to be boring.” But when they revealed the actual menu, it had items like Cheeseburger Sliders, Firecracker Shrimp, Tortilla Soup, Texas Ribeye Steak or Blackened Redfish, and Warm Chocolate Chip Skillet Cookies. Fans remembered the comment and proved Spiranac’s ‘boring’ claims wrong on social media.
