Phil Mickelson has received a lot of attention in the past few weeks. First, it was due to his weight loss and healthier self. And next, it was due to his stellar performance at the Augusta National. Nonetheless, he became the talk of the town for being ignored at the final round broadcast of the Masters Tournament. It has been a week since the Masters ended, but new information keeps popping up. The speculation around Mickelson’s absence in the coverage has now got some additional facts.
The truth is out about Phil Mickelson and the Masters broadcast
People were clearly surprised by Phil Mickelson’s performance at the Masters. Despite being 52 years old, he tied up for second place on the leaderboard. However, it wasn’t just surprising for the golf fans but also for the media covering the Masters. CBS’s final-round coverage at Augusta National on Sunday afternoon left out Mickelson, which came as another big shock for everyone.

The famous CBS personality Jim Nantz also had something to say about it. As per Golf.com, he wanted to clarify that the shadow ban of LIV defectors, including Mickelson, was not intentional. Nantz spoke to Jimmy Traina of Sports Illustrated and laid down the facts. He denied the rumors that CBS restricted the coverage for the LIV golfers during the Masters. In fact, he provided a rational reason as to why ‘left’ was not seen in the tournament coverage. He said, “If you went back and looked at the full coverage on Sunday, including Sunday morning, the finishing up of the third round, our guys were really on Phil.”
The port commentator revealed the truth and said, “Part of it is optics, when you look at the leaderboard at the end, and you see that Phil’s tied for second, you think, Well, my gosh, they must have been on him all day.” Of course, in hindsight, the clubhouse leader would have likely garnered more attention from CBS. He already caught a lot of limelight with his weight loss and records. However, according to Nantz, CBS showed a fair amount of coverage of Mickelson.

It was not the first time
Media’s failure to cover the clubhouse leader is nothing new. A similar thing happened with Rory McIlroy last year. He was the clubhouse leader who shot 64 on Sunday and landed himself in second position on the leaderboard. Last year also, CBS had to suffer similar accusations for the coverage of McIlroy’s charge up the back nine.
They could not even broadcast McIlroy’s amazing chip-in birdie on the 72nd hole. Instead of showing it live, they opted for tape-delay replay. So probably, it is not about the defector, but maybe about the clubhouse leader. But the lesson here is no one likes missing crucial moments, but no one can predict which moment will be special and which won’t.
