Rory McIlroy hasn’t had the best luck of late. From inconsistent performances to narrowly missed victories, the Irishman has seen a lot of dark days of late. Just last week too, he failed to make the cut at the year’s first major championship. And now once again the 4-time major winner faces a hurdle. With his recent actions ahead of next week’s PGA Tour event, he now faces a serious penalty!
Rory McIlroy pays a potential multi-million-dollar penalty for his actions
Last year, the PGA Tour significantly increased the purses of many events to compete with LIV Golf. With that huge opportunity for players to earn more from these “elevated events” also came rules. The pros were only exempted from one of these elevated events of their choosing and, by the PGA Tour’s rules, had to compete in all the rest.

At the beginning of this year, McIlroy chose not to compete in the Tournament of Champions, thus exercising his elevated event skip. But things now seem to have taken a bad turn for the 23-time PGA Tour winner! He recently announced his withdrawal from the RBC Heritage next week.
The Tour requires that you play all but one elevated event this year, and Rory already skipped Kapalua.
The penalty for not meeting the full requirement is presumed to be that players could miss out on a percentage of their PIP bonus. https://t.co/QkpFViHjdA https://t.co/L5InRrbloU

The $20 million event is also an elevated one, and thus McIlroy now has to face the consequences of his withdrawal. What is the cost of his withdrawal, then? Well, as per a statement released by the policy board in October last year, “The penalty for not satisfying all elements of the mandatory participation requirement is limited to the bonus distribution for the Player Impact Program.”
Last year, McIlroy placed second on the PIP leaderboard and earned $12 million through it. This year too, he was sure to rank high, but now, thanks to his recent move, it seems like a percentage of his winnings would be held back as a penalty.

It is clear that the former world No. 1 is not the same glorious self he was at the end of last season! This year, not only has the pro failed to grab a win yet, but he has also been inconsistent on the course. Last week, after carding six bogies in the second round, the Irishman even failed to make the cut at the Masters.
His withdrawal from next week’s event is also another setback since the likes of Jon Rahm and Scottie Scheffler are likely to take to the course and battle for the top spot of the OWGR. McIlroy is now third on the leaderboard, and if his withdrawals and underperformances continue, he is likely to fall further.
