Justin Thomas, Jordan Spieth among notable players to miss US Open cut
PGA Tour’s Rickie Fowler is in blistering form at the ongoing US Open. After a history-making first round, the Southern Californian carded a second-round 68 to stay on top as the tournament enters the weekend. While Fowler has truly been a treat to watch, the same cannot be said about his close friends and PGAT compatriots, Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth.
World No. 10 Spieth, who previously won the major in 2015, unfortunately missed the cutline by just one shot. Meanwhile, 2-time major winner Thomas couldn’t help but feel “embarrassed” after shooting an 81, the second lowest score of the golfer’s PGAT career. “This is the lowest I’ve felt,” the World No. 16 told the press after his dismal outing. “But I’ll figure it out.”

Another golfer in the top 20 of the OWGR who shockingly missed the cut is World No. 7 Max Homa. The 32-year-old finished his two rounds at 4-over 144, failing to make the cut by two shots. Former World No. 1 Jason Day (76) and 2013 US Open winner Justin Rose (68) were among the other heavyweights not to make it to the final two rounds of the competition.
LIV pro and 6-time major winner Phil Mickelson, the record-holder for most runner-up finishes at the American Open, missed the chance to achieve a career grand slam this time around as well. Meanwhile, Nick Taylor, who entered the event after an emotional win at the Canadian Open last week, also had to leave early after failing to keep the momentum going at the LACC.
Fans couldn’t help but express dismay over the missed cuts, with the likes of Thomas, Homa, and Mickelson bearing the brunt of their disappointment.
Fans react after golfing heavyweights miss the cut at LACC
For Justin Thomas, his US Open performance is the latest in a series of golfing setbacks. Following rounds of 73-81, the golfer ended up missing the cut by a whopping 12 shots. Fans couldn’t believe it either, with one saying, “What happened to JT?? This is not like him at all..”
“Not sure JT is trying anymore,” wrote another.
Another fan took a jibe at the golfers, saying, “‘LACC is too easy’ – not these guys.”

Entering the US Open, many had high hopes for Max Homa. Despite scripting stunning victories on the PGA Tour, major trophies have always evaded the golfer. On Friday, his wait for a coveted major win got extended yet again. “Think we will still have to hear all weekend Homa is from the LA area?,” commented one. “As good as Max Homa is, the majors are an utter mystery,” said another dejected fan.

Meanwhile, the golf world is all too familiar with Phil Mickelson’s misfortunes at the US Open. After all, he has finished 2nd in the competition a record six times in the past! After good outings in the year’s previous two majors, many were looking forward to the LIV pro’s performance. However, Lefty dashed all hopes as he missed the cut by one shot. “Phil the unthrill,” wrote one Instagram user. “Why is Mickelson here? Thought it was notable players,” said another.
