When the coveted Open Championship was played for the very first time in 1860 at the Prestwick Golf Club in Ayrshire, Scotland, there was no US Open, Australian Open, or Japan Open. It was just this one Open Championship which took place once a year on several British golf courses. But later when nations had their own Open Championship, they started calling it the British Open, in order to distinguish it from their own national Open.

But a highly esteemed major cannot have two different names right? Which is why it has always been a part of the controversy. And now that it is approaching, the 2021 Open champion Collin Morikawa, sheds light on how he would prefer to designate this auspicious tournament.

In an interview, Morikawa was asked about his views on this conflict between calling the major the British Open or the Open Championship. He blatantly showcased his views and made it clear what he would like to call it and why he would like to call it that, I definitely called it the British Open the year I won and then people gave me hate for it, so then I called it The Open last year, but I played better when I called it the British Open, so I might call it the British Open. But obviously British pertains to certain parts of Europe…I think people understand whether you say British Open or The Open. At the end of the day if you win it you can call it whatever the hell you want.

How likely Collin is Morikawa expected to perform this year?
