Megan Khang’s father was the only man who ever coached her. Although he only picked up the golf clubs and knew about the game of golf in his 20s, her father, Lee Khang, self-taught himself by watching YouTube videos. Things he learned through videos were passed down to his daughter. Considering the tumultuous events in her life, her journey to the 1x LPGA Tour winner to become a pro has been an uphill battle. And the man who’s been her biggest supported her through all of it was at one point the biggest challenge she faced in her personal life as she debuted on the LPGA Tour.

Megan Khang and her complicated father-daughter relationship

The 26-year-old debuted on the LPGA Tour in 2016 at the age of 18. Megan Khang was learning the twists and turns of her professional career but in the end, she was a “moody teenager” as she described herself on the People Purpose podcast recently.

Khang was asked about her one challenge while becoming a pro and her answer might shock a few. She said, “The biggest challenge was my dad.” Khang detailed that her father was her coach and still is, when they started on the LPGA Tour, both were quite clueless, and thus, they “were constantly head-butting”.

Narrating the story of her initial days, Khang said, “We didn’t what were doing. I didn’t have a caddie like my dad was caddying for me.” Which is something she didn’t want as a fussy teenager. She told her father, “I don’t want you to caddy.” Father Lee replied, “Well, you can’t find someone else.” Khang explained that her relationship with her father was the typical parent-child and they were constantly in banter.

But it was just for the initial days as Khang moved to become a stable pro, she changed her caddie to give her father a break and have a better relationship. At some point, the dilemma between parent-child and boss-employee was so great that Khang told her father, “I’m paying you, I’m your boss”. However, everything was happening with a hint of fun. The man who was once her biggest challenge was also the one behind her one fine motive.
