Is Ludvig Åberg the next big thing in golf, or just another flash in the pan?

It was a historical day for the American golf scene after Xander Schauffele lifted the Claret Jug and clinched his second major, as, after 42 years, all majors were won by American golfers. However, the next time, it might be a Swedish pro seizing a major victory, particularly Ludvig Aberg.

It has only been a year since the 24-year-old made his professional debut. Yet the young gun has already secured a spot among this season’s top golfers through impressive performances. Once called a generational talent by Luke Donald, Aberg was put in a group with pros like Max Homa, Viktor Hovland, Tommy Fleetwood, and more by Golf Digest.

The infamous magazine asked the golf fans on X who would be the next major out of the group and asked them to make a bold prediction. Although just a year old as a pro, Aberg turned out to be the fans’ favorite over other top PGA Tour golfers and was expected to win the next major, which will be the 89th Masters in the 2025 season.

In the 2024 season, Ludvig Aberg’s performance has been commendable, as the one-time PGA Tour winner competed in many events and was close to winning two. The 24-year-old was a runner-up at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and nearly secured his first major title at the 88th Masters, as he finished solo 2nd. Thus, looking at his performances, he was this fan’s first choice. They said, “Aberg has been playing so really good golf in recent years. Strong game. And really think he’ll break thru soon. He has that it factor to his game. Hovland is probably a close second.”

Have an interesting take?

In the four majors, Aberg has either topped the leaderboard or failed to make the cut entirely. At the Masters and the U.S. Open, the Swede was 2nd and T12. However, he missed the cut at the PGA Championship and The Open, making the only two missed cuts of his 2024 season. Despite this, Aberg has shown that he has the prowess to defeat the field, as he has made seven top-10s so far. Hence, the fan was confident about Aberg’s major victory, saying “The Big Vig,” would win the next major. Another user was of a similar opinion, as they supported Aberg for the major win and said, “Aberg and it’s not even a close decision lmao.”

Scottie Scheffler won six times on the PGA Tour, including a win at Augusta National for the second time. On the other hand, Xander Schauffele won two majors in two months as he won the PGA Championship and the Open in a historical manner. The two have been in great form in the 2024 season. Although World No. 1 and World No. 2 took major titles home this season, when it came to choosing the next major winner, one fan chose the Swedish pro and said, “Xander or Scottie will win another one before anyone else on this list, but if the question is who will be the next to win their first, it’s Viktor.”

Although Aberg lost Rookie of the Year to Eric Cole in 2023, the Swedish pro showed that he might have been more deserving of the title in the 2024 season with many top finishes. The 1-time PGA Tour winner has played 16 events so far, out of which he was in the top 25 in 11 of them. This consistent form catapulted the 24-year-old to be ranked 6th on OWGR in just his second year as a pro. Thus, this viewer was supporting Aberg and another pro for the major win. They commented, “Based on current form? Probably either Cantlay or Ludvig.”

There are more than eight months until the next major is held at Augusta National in April. By then, the forms of the golfers would change, so it might be difficult to predict the major winner. Yet, Aberg had become a fan favorite. Who could be the next major winner, per your predictions? Share it in the comments.
