However, his nickname ‘shark’ is definitely stuck with him for eternity. He once opened up about how he got this name in the first place.

Greg Norman revealed the origin of his nickname ‘Great White Shark’

Greg Norman is known for more than just his records on the field. The golf legend owns and runs several businesses and is currently golf’s most successful entrepreneur. His latest venture LIV Golf got him into countless controversies. However, despite all rumors and alleged hate, Norman is loved by millions of fans. And his nickname ‘shark’ has given him another level of popularity.

There was a time when he revealed how he got such a unique nickname in the world of golf. In an episode of the Fore Play Golf podcast, Norman explained how he was named the ‘shark’ for the first time. It was during a media interaction at the 1981 Masters when a reporter wanted to know about Norman’s background. The golfer was leading the tournament after two rounds.

“I had long blonde hair, I played really aggressive golf, and I told him I grew up on the Great Barrier Reef and I…dive with sharks and great white sharks and tiger sharks and all that,” he said. And the next thing he knew was that he got a new name for himself, which he absolutely loved.

“Saturday morning, the Atlanta Constitution, the headline was ‘Great White Shark leads US Masters’, that’s how it started,” he added. “It was the best thing any editorial media guy had ever done for me.” We get what Norman wanted to convey. The golf great once talked about how several media houses spread ‘fake news’ about him, and how frustrating it was for him. However, this one time with the Atlanta Constitution has been Norman’s best experience with the media yet.
