Former PGA Tour legend, Greg Norman, has received a lot of hate in recent times. In late October 2021, LIV Golf announced Greg as their CEO. The Saudi-backed league has been in the limelight for some time now, with both fans, and golf enthusiasts hating on the league and all the players and staff associated with it. Norman has been under scrutiny from not only the fans and the media but also many other sports stars. Not too long ago, famous tennis player, Martina Navratilova went out of her way to insult the shark.

Greg Norman is reviled for his connection to LIV Golf

The 20-time PGA Tour winner has been in the negative spotlight of the media a lot recently. Norman headed the charge in September, as he travelled to Washington to lobby Congress on behalf of LIV Golf.” LIV Golf is coming to the Hill this week to meet with lawmakers from both parties,” a LIV spokesperson told The Washington Post.

When this news came out to the fans and the public, it did not sit well. Martina Navratilova went on Twitter to call out Greg Norman and abuse him. She tweeted, “Greg is a sellout of the highest degree.”

Martina isn’t the only sports star to lash out at Norman. In June, after winning his 21st PGA Tour event, Rory McIlroy took a dig at Norman his 21st PGA Tour event, Rory McIlroy took a dig at Greg. In a post-match interview, the current world number one said, “Twenty-first PGA Tour win, one more than someone else. That gave me a little bit of extra incentive today and I’m happy to get it done.”

Rory has been a strong voice against LIV Golf and its members, and he is certainly quite open about it.

The Shark’s reason to stay with LIV Golf

Despite the insults and abuse that Norman receives regularly, the LIV Golf CEO is determined to head its campaign. The question arises: why? While many speculate that Greg is doing this just for the money, Norman says otherwise. In an interview with the New York Post, Norman opened up about the reason he signed with LIV Golf. He said he wanted to grow the game and take it to new heights. “We are here to play golf, serve fans, grow the game, and give additional opportunities to players,” he said.

Norman also went on to explain his stance in response to everyone’s criticism of the Saudi Arabians. “We are not a political organization,” he said and went on to tell the media how he believes golf can bring about good change around the world. “I also have seen firsthand the good that golf can do around the world, and Saudi Arabia is no different.
