Did Team USA choke under pressure at the 2023 Solheim Cup, or was it just bad luck?

The 34th Solheim Cup is just around the corner as the golf world gets ready to witness a heated competition between Team USA and the Europeans. This time, the Solheim Cup will be held on American soil, giving Stacy Lewis’s roster a benefit that the Europeans had last year. In 2023, Team Europe did not win or lose the cup but retained it as the match was tied with 14-14 scores and they were the 2021 winners.

It was truly a heartbreaking moment for the entire nation and the 12 women representing the red, blue, and white at the Finca Cortesin in Andalucia. From the three-day event that broke the Americans, here are the top three most devastating moments of Team USA from the 2023 Solheim Cup.

1. Nelly Korda’s loss cost the Solheim Cup

It was already heartbreaking that after a 4-0 morning session on Friday of the 2023 Solheim Cup, Team America was not able to capitalize on it. But the end of the 33rd edition was the worst of all. Nelly Korda was put up against the home-ground favorite, Carlota Ciganda. And with cheers, the Spanish pro led the singles for eight holes. However, birdies on the 9th and 10th put the lead to just 1 up. Then at the 15th hole, Korda tied the match with three holes to go. World no. 1 also knew that the burden of winning was on her shoulders at this one point and the USA would have won 15-13.

At the 17th hole, both Korda and Ciganda made brilliant approach shots. And the 14-time LPGA Tour winner was hopeful that she would putt a birdie there and win the Solheim up at the 18th. But fate had other plans as Korda’s ball lipped out and Ciganda made it 2 up to win the game. It was a heartbreaking end that even pushed Korda to take a long hiatus from the game.

2. Ally Ewing lost out on the last hole

Although everyone remembers Korda’s round as the crucial one, it was Ally Ewing’s, that turned the tide. The 3-time LPGA Tour winner was up against Caroline Hedwall and was 3-up for the first 13th holes of their matches. But something changed after that. Ewing missed two birdies on the 14th and 15th but parred the 16th hole for a tie. The lead was now shortened to 1 up and on the 17th, the unfathomable happened. The 31-year-old missed the par-3 birdie going 1 down.

At the last hole in Finca Cortesin, Ewing wanted to birdie putt the par-5 but Hedwall emerged as a better player and drained an eagle for Americans and Europea to be tied for the first time on Sunday with 12-12 and then you know what happened after.

3. Lexi Thompson shows her potential but to no avail

The 2023 season was regarded as one of the worst years for Lexi Thompson. Even her playing in the Solheim Cup was a sort of miracle, as Thompson had missed 10 cuts in the 13 events she played. It was expected that she would probably lose more than win and Stacy Lewis might only sleet for Sunday Singles.

But that was not the case. Not only the Thompson win the final round against Emily Pederson, but she also won 2 points for the Americans in the previous sessions. Although the 11-time LPGA Tour winner gave her best with criticism following her game, it was heartbreaking that she could not bear the fruits of her hard work.

This time, the Solheim Cup has come down to the United States at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Virginia. The gallery will be cheering for Team USA more than the other side and it would be a spectacle to see if the Americans will dominate the outsiders and win the prestigious Solheim Cup!
