With his latest tweet, Rory McIlroy has stirred up a heated debate on social media. The Northern Irishman, in his tweet, threw elite pros and some golf world giants under the bus and took sides with the governing bodies imposing the rule. Early next week, the USGA and R&A are likely to announce that they will change the rules to reduce the distance in golf, and this change won’t be limited to elite players.

The decision by golf’s ruling bodies comes after several years of discussions with equipment manufacturers and others about various proposals involving clubs, balls, and a diameter rollback. McIlroy’s tweet had the golf world spinning, and fans were quick to bring TaylorMade, the golfer’s giant sponsor,

The 20x PGA Tour winner supported the proposed golf ball rollback policy, saying that he does not understand the anger against the golf rollback policy. He said that the policy would “make no difference whatsoever to the average golfer and put golf back on a path of sustainability.” The PGAT pro said that he believes that the policy will help to “bring back certain skills in the pro game that have been eradicated over the past two decades.” However, this was not the part that got the fans all riled up.

The 4X major champion went ahead and said that if pеoplе arе upsеt about thе dеcision to changе thе golf ball, thеy shouldn’t blamе thе govеrnmеnt bodiеs in charge. Instead, people should be unhappy with the companies that make golf clubs and balls and with the elite pros, who initially showed discontent with the proposed change. With Mcilroy’s words, fans were quick to bring TaylorMade, a $2B giant, into the picture.

The golfer continued his firm stance, and said that the reason why “Elite pros and ball manufacturers” don’t want bifurcation is because it would “negatively affect their bottom lines.”  The Irish golfer continued and pointed out that the game is already bifurcated, as the pros do not play with the same equipment as amateurs. McIlroy was not done speaking here, as he had some other things to say as well.

Extending about how the manufacturers of golf equipment played a role, he said, “They put pressure on the governing bodies to roll it back to a lesser degree for everyone. Bifurcation was the logical answer for everyone, but yet again, in this game, money talks.”

Rory McIlroy’s post garnered quite a lot of attention and left the fans shocked. Fans nearly could not believe what they were reading about the game being already bifurcated and started commenting about McIlroy’s sponsor.

With the golfer’s remarks, fans think TaylorMade must be furious

Ponting out the golfer’s statement of amateurs and professionals playing with the same stuff, a fan commented about the brand’s supposed emotion, and said, “TaylorMade must be raging.”

Keeping in mind what the golfer has said, a fan commented that he would like to see him walk away from the brand and create a bag with a better brand.

A fan was quick to point out the tension that McIlroy’s remarks must have created at the brand’s headquarters. They referred to the incident as a “PR plane crash.”

Another fan was furious at the possibility of the brand lying to people. They pointed out that the brand has always said that the professionals play with the same putter, ball, and clubs as the amateurs. Their question was pretty clear, as they wrote, “Did TaylorMade lie to us ?”

One fan made a comment about how all the brands make separate equipment for the Tour. He shared his personal experience with the equipment and came in support of the brand.
