Amidst the rivalry between LIV Golf and the PGA Tour, LIV has dealt a significant blow to the PGA Tour. In December 2023, Jon Rahm‘s official confirmation of his move to LIV golf came as a surprise to many. It is devastating for the PGA Tour, given Rahm’s status as a two-time major winner and the reigning Masters champion. LIV Golf has been trying to recruit a 29-year-old pro for nearly two years, but he was unwilling to make a jump because of the shotgun start of LIV Golf.
In July 2023, Rahm disclosed during a podcast that he had a meeting with the CEO of LIV Golf in early 2022. During that time, the new format was just about to launch, as confirmed by ESPN. When Norman made an effort to recruit Rahm with “numbers, numbers and numbers, “Rahm referred Norman to his manager and said, “we’ll talk in the future.” But in December last year, Rahm signed a multiyear contract worth more than $300 million. However, uncertainty surrounded Rahm’s decision to make this move, and recently, it was revealed through a Twitter post.

During a pre-Masters conference call, Rahm discusses his move to Greg Norman’s LIV Golf, where the pro is “comfortable with” the “decision” he made about moving. However, the former No. 1 is still “hoping” for a “comeback” to defend his Masters title. For him, it “would be a dream come true.”
Following his confession on the move, it is anticipated that some high-profile names are attached to his decision. Because of Rahm’s addition to the Saudi-financed circuit probably wasn’t a coincidence, as negotiations between PGA Tour officials and representatives from Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund were in their final stages to merge their commercial interests.
