PGA Tour Collin Morikawa, who won the Open Championship in 2021, returns to the event to try his luck again. Days before the game starts Colin shed light on how he is prepping for the game by looking at Woods and McIlroy. At the press conference, the media person gave the example of Woods using his driver once and McIlroy using it multiple times for winning and asked Morikawa about his strategy. To which he gave a very smart answer “Whatever allows you to win.” Colin said that he watched Woods’ video to do some learning for the event.

Collin said, “I watched some video from when Tiger won in ’06. It was as brown as could be and dry as could be out there, right, and like that was his strategy, but he also had a lot of mid to long irons in.”

However, Morikawa believes that the final result is a mixture of hard work and luck. He said “I think that’s a mix. Even today with no wind I was hitting 3-iron, 3-wood, driver. I hit every club off the tee. It’s going to be a mix.”
Besides the drivers and putters, Morikawa also believes that how one operates on the green also plays a major role, “It really is how much you want to take on the bunkers, how aggressive you want to be off the tee.”

Lastly, he thinks that one thing else that matters is what kind of player you are giving an example of. “A guy like Rory, how far he hits it, yes, he’s going to be carrying some bunkers that I can’t carry, so he might be playing a little different strategy.”

However,  his strategy is to stay clear. He says, “For me, it’s really to stay away, plot my way around this golf course, and take advantage of certain holes where I might have a wedge in.”

So far Morikawa has won two majors. He claimed the first prize at the 2020 PGA Championship and his second victory came next year only at the 2021 Open Championship.
