In 20 appearances at the Open Championship, Tiger Woods, with three Claret Jugs, and many top finishes, has shown his ability to master links courses. However, despite his golfing prowess, the legendary pro has never won at Royal Troon over the past two decades. Woods’s run at the oldest major of the game of golf started in 1995 and resulted in him playing the Royal Troon two times in his career.

On both occasions, the 15-time major winner was unable to win the event. TW Legion posted on X (formerly known as Twitter) that at his debut at Royal Troon Golf Club in 1997, Woods was coming off a win at the then-Motorola Western Open. The 48-year-old recorded 72-74-64-74 in the four days, finishing even par for the tournament, and was T24.

In another instance, the result was a bit better. Woods finished 1 over 281, however, he secured a T9 on the leaderboard. Now, heading into his third appearance on Royal Troon, what might be the outcome? If asked, 38-time DP World Tour winner Colin Montgomerie would say that the 82-time PGA Tour winner should probably bid adieu to the game of golf as his performance has shown a consistent decline and that he may have lost the fervor he once played with during his early days.

But when this question was posed to the fans, even though Woods’s fan base is aware of the 48-year-old’s capabilities, because of his past few performances, the supporters also did not show much enthusiasm when it came to his upcoming appearance at the 152nd Open at Royal Troon GC.

Doubts about Woods’s ability make their way into the minds of netizens

In the 2024 season, Tiger Woods has played only four events so far. The 48-year-old was optimistic at first when he declared to play at least one event per month. But his injury-ridden body has not been able to hold up as he would have expected. In the four events, Woods withdrew from the Genesis Invitational after the first round, and he missed the cut at the U.S. Open and the PGA Championship. The only event he played for four days was the 88th Masters, where he was dead last at T60.

What’s your perspective on:

Has Tiger Woods lost his magic, or can he still surprise us at The Open Championship?

Have an interesting take?

Seemingly, it has not been a pleasurable look on Woods’ record card and neither for his fans, making this user predict Woods’s 2024 Open results, saying, “Here we go again. Gets on his PJ on Friday evening and is back in Orlando by midnight. Misses cut again.” As the 48-year-old has undergone several microdiscectomy procedures and has a fused back as well, the weather and temperatures do affect Woods’s body differently. This fan predicted based on that and said, “I honestly think he’ll struggle with the temps in Scotland he’ll miss the cut unfortunately.” Most fans predicted that Woods would miss the cut.

It can get quite drizzly at the Royal Troon Golf Club in St. Andrews and as per the weather reports, the Open Championship might have some showers here and there too. This will make the Royal Troon GC softer and with winds going high, it would become an issue for the pros, especially, the 15-time major winner.  Thus, this viewer said, “Good weather: T56 Rain or wind: MC.” Another viewer made a similar prediction; however, they also accounted for the possibility of a withdrawal. In the last nine starts on the PGA Tour, Woods has withdrawn three times, so there is a chance he may do so again at Royal Troon. Thus, this fan dejectedly said, “Unfortunately t42, mc, or wd.”

Even though there was a wave of fans saying that Woods would miss the cut,  a few still believed that he would play better. Having won the Open Championship three times before and amassing 82 titles in his life, the latest being at the 2019 ZOZO Championship, this fan believed that Woods still has the former gameplay in him and among the young golfers, he could still chart the leaderboard. They said, “T-15, tiger is going to have a good showing and show us some of his vintage self. Dudes body looks to be in decent shape now, just need to get the putter rolling!! Lets go TW!”

Should Mr. T retire from golf now? The 48-year-old once revealed that he would leave the golf greens once he believed he could no longer compete and many now, including Montgomerie, believe that maybe Woods’s competitive spirit has left the pro and he should retire soon. Including this user, who said, “Who gives a s**t? He should have retired already so we can quit talking about him.” However, after leaving the PGA Tour events, Woods revealed he would play the PGA Tour Champions.

Regardless of what people have predicted Tiger Woods’s performance would be at Royal Troon, the 48-year-old might still have it in him to shock the masses. After all, he had won the 2008 U.S. Open with a broken leg and, hopefully, could summon that same spirit once again.
