The newly updated OWGR system has gathered a great amount of controversy around it. And it is all because of the recently introduced functioning of the system. Several players were against the new ranking system, but others were supporting it too. However, the recent Open Champion, Cameron Smith, has now opened up about his views regarding the matter.

Cameron Smith feels the OWGR system is becoming obsolete

After his recent Open Championship victory, the golf star fell into a huge controversy for shifting to LIV Golf. And now, he is back in the headlines due to his statements about the OWGR system. Smith makes his debut for the season at the Asian Tour’s flagship event in Saudi Arabia. But despite being at the 4th rank worldwide, the champion is not very happy.

There were huge chances for Smith to make it to the top of the world rankings if he had stayed on the PGA Tour a little longer. It could have been the first time for him to be World No. 1. However, things are about to get worse for the golfer as he continues to play in the Saudi league with no access to OWGR points.

Ever since Smith joined the breakaway circuit, he has only played two OWGR-sanctioned tournaments. Whereas World No. 1 Rory McIlroy has played six and World No.3 Jon Rahm has played eight since the FedEx Cup Playoffs. Undoubtedly, it is a huge matter of concern for the LIV Golf defector.

When asked how he feels about his position on the leaderboard, Smith said it ‘hurts’ to even look at it“I mean, I’ve tried to take it not that badly, to be honest,” he said. “For sure it hurts. I feel as though I was really close to getting to No.1, and that was definitely something I wanted to tick off, but kind of the longer that this stuff goes on, I think the more obsolete those rankings become.”

However, Smith also looks at the positive side of the overall situation. He mentioned that no access to OWGR points doesn’t stop the golfer from doing his best. In his words, “when you rock up to a tournament, you know who you have to beat, whether there’s a World Ranking or not.”.
