While the present keeps us engaged, revisiting the past can induce genuine laughter and a sense of nostalgia. This is especially true of throwbacks that involve a controversial incident or a funny one or something that is so ironic that it distracts us from the status quo. On rare occasions, it sets off a trial of trolls behind the individual concerned.

A recent throwback to an incident involving Nelly Korda has generated mixed reactions from the golfing community. The Instagram page of Zire Golf has shared a video of Korda shooting the ball out of the freeway. The footage is from a tournament held last year, and the incident resulted in a major setback for the 8-time LPGA tour winner. Let’s look into the details of the incident.

To pick or not to pick…

The video footage is from the Amundi Evian Championship 2022, where Nelly Korda shot a ball out of bounds. A spectator approaching the area enthusiastically picked up the ball, and the commentators started booing. “It’s not a souvenir,” Grant Broone repeatedly exclaimed.

A steward explained the situation to the spectator, who clearly appeared to be sightseeing. The spectator then tried to place the ball where she found it, and she probably missed the spot. The distraction clearly disturbed Korda’s game. She was doing just fine until then. At the specific hole where the incident distracted her, she scored a double bogey. Nelly Korda had scored birdies and eagles in the preceding holes.

Nelly Korda finished 8th in the tournament, sharing the position with six others, with a score of 13-under. She was merely four strokes behind the title winner, Brooke Henderson, and could have easily bagged the tournament in different circumstances.

The comment section really turned into a troll booth for this throwback. Whether they were harmless jokes, intended for just a good laugh, or politically driven by female-targeted hatred is a mystery. But let’s look at some of these comments.

“Stupid shiz gonna happen” — trolling turns into a gender war

Some comments were genuinely funny. This one here suggested that maybe the spectator should have helped Korda out. “At least chuck it back into the fairway for the gal.” A few comments took it too far and started berating the spectator for being too dumb. “Not gonna lie, I’d rather have her in prison than someone who robs a gas station. That level of ignorance is dangerous.”

Then came the problematic ones, targeting women, which turned the comment section into a war zone.  “wow, i didn’t know women’s golf had spectators. (i’m kiddddddddding).”

“Go fix some sandwiches”

“Women + golf event = stupid shiz gonna happen.”

The last comment, elegantly presented as an equation, triggered a woman, and she responded with heat. “I think you’re confused – it’s a women’s golf event! Are you saying women golf events are stupid?” The discussion then got derailed into a heated argument about the guy’s own golf prowess and his personal life, which is quite irrelevant to this conversation.

Despite the potential setback, Korda spoke with empathy when she was asked about the incident after the round was over. What would you have done? Would you have gotten mad at her? Or let it go easily? Let us know in the comments!
