Is Tommy Fleetwood's slump a temporary setback, or are his best days behind him?

Looking through Tommy Fleetwood’s 2024 season gives a thorough result that it has been neither exceptionally good nor drastically worse but something average. The Englishman had a few good finishes, particularly four top-10s out of the eighteen events he has played so far this season. The most recent one was at the BMW Championship at Castle Pines Golf Club. Despite the high altitude and winds, Fleetwood finished T5 exceedingly better than the T22 he acquired at the St. Jude Championship. After this turnaround, he qualified for the TOUR Championship.

Thus, the 33-year-old was asked at the press conference in Colorado if he felt his ball hitting was as good as he did in previous events. Fleetwood contemplated and said, “No, not quite. Honestly, I never felt that comfortable at the Olympics with my game, but I played very well” and yet won the silver medal. He further added how he played well at the Castle Pines too. Looking back at some of his performances, especially the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill and the PLAYERS Championship, he missed the cut at the former while he was T35 at TPC Sawgrass; Fleetwood said, “I was really struggling with my game.”

But then he worked around, was T7 at the Valero Texas Open, and finished T3 at the Masters. But even with these results, Fleetwood was disappointed that there were few top finishes in his 2024 season. He expressed, “I’ve said a bunch of times the one thing that’s been lacking, I haven’t had that many amazing results.” However, he accepted that his performance has been good, but “just not the great ones that actually have a massive impact on things like the FedExCup and the year and things like that,” said the 33-year-old.

In the end, Fleetwood concluded that he would have to have patience, as he has been consistent and good, so a title might just be around the corner. Coming to East Lake, the Englishman may get the fruit of his patience and get his maiden PGA Tour victory. But getting into the TOUR Championship was anything but stressful, yet one thing helped Fleetwood, and he successfully made it.

One thing that helped Tommy Fleetwood secure a place in East Lake

Before the BMW Championship started, Tommy Fleetwood entered the week at 31st on the FedExCup Standings and potentially out of the TOUR Championship field. But his fifth finish at Castle Pines catapulted him to 22nd on the standings and a well-deserved place in the East Lake Field. And the Englishman did describe it as “an amazing achievement” and a fantastic way to end the PGA Tour season.

But he later explained that it was not in terms of making any difference to his season. He further expressed that it was one of his goals, but “As soon as you put too much pressure on yourself for something, it’s the easiest thing to do in the world, now it becomes harder. I think downplaying that all week and stuff has helped me,” said Fleetwood at the presser.

And although he loved to play East Lake, he explained that he would downplay the event next week as well and remain calm amidst all the hustle and bustle. It surely worked for Tommy Fleetwood in Colorado, and hopefully, it will work wonders in Atlanta too.
