Can Lydia Ko balance her LPGA career and marriage, or will one have to take a backseat?

Lydia Ko has had a hectic year in golf. She started off by winning the maiden event and then getting 3 top-10 finishes. But August will probably be her most memorable month as she won the Olympic gold and entered into the LPGA Hall of Fame as well as winning the AIG Women’s British Open. With golf keeping her so busy, is she able to spend quality time with her husband of almost two years?

It’s good that he likes golf too because, with tour life, Ko finds it hard to spend time with him. So, whenever he can, the son of Hyundai Card’s Vice-President, Chung Jun, who also works for Hyundai, follows her to tournaments and supports her, as seen by the couple’s photo with Ko’s trophy on the famous bridge at the Old Course. “It was something that we could do together,” she has said about them playing golf, adding, “On off weeks, I practice on weekends and if he didn’t play, we’d be spending the weekend away from each other again.”

The couple are both of South Korean heritage and Lydia Ko says that this gives them keen insights into each other’s personalities, “After my husband met people I know and went to my hometown, he said he now realizes why I am the way I am!”. She now lives in California and visits her home in New Zealand whenever she can.

Even though he is a billionaire, Lydia Ko says she is still the star in the family and that Chung Jun has to take a back seat whenever he comes to accompany her. She says that she is very grateful to her partner for being so understanding and accepting, especially when she is unable to do the same. Indeed, she has often spoken about how supportive he is of her game.

She has also said that her golf game greatly improved by having him supporting her, “It makes a big difference and to know that there’s somebody at the end of my round no matter what I shoot, to support me and just think of me, not the golfer Lydia Ko but Bo-Gyung, my Korean name.”
