Who was the better caddie for Tiger Woods: the outspoken Steve Williams or the loyal Joe LaCava?

Not only do 15 major championships and 82 PGA Tour wins define Tiger Woods as he is today, but his net worth of $1.3 billion plays a similar role. But what about his caddies? Just like the golfer, they also spent equal time on the greens and played a crucial role in his illustrious career.

After his professional debut in September 1996, Woods has now spent over 25 years and has had numerous caddies by his side, including Mike “Fluff” Cowan, who is his latest caddie. Among all of them, Steve Williams and Joe LaCava have spent the most time as his bagmen. What do their net worths look like?

A caddy usually earns 5 to 10 percent of the golfer’s winnings over and above his or her base salary, so their earnings are directly proportional to the golfer’s performance. Steve Willams began caddying at the early age of six and has spent significant time on the greens. He took the job of Woods’s bagman in 1999 after Woods parted ways with Bryon Bell. At that time, the 48-year-old was still in his prime, and their first victory together was the 1999 Memorial Tournament.

They were partners until 2011, and during their time together, Tiger Woods won 63 PGA Tour events and 13 major championships, as per the Caddie Network. While Woods made a huge amount thanks to his performance, Willams did the same. By the end of 2010, Williams’s net worth was $12 million. During their time together, Tiger Woods also gifted Steve Williams 10 vehicles he won at tournaments.

After parting ways with Woods, he has also worked with pros like Peter Thomson and Jason Day, among others. He also wrote a couple of books. Thanks to all of that, his net worth is now nearly $20 million. Joe LaCava joined Team Woods in 2012. Their first win was the 2012 Arnold Palmer Invitational. During their partnership, Woods won 11 PGA Tour events and one major championship, and they were together until 2020.

Although Woods won majors and multiple PGA Tour tournaments with both caddies, the number of wins greatly differs if compared to Joe LaCava. Besides Woods, Joe LaCava has also caddied for players like Dustin Johnson and Patrick Cantlay. As a result, Joe LaCava’s current net worth is approximately $2 million. Despite the success with Steve Willams, why did Woods part ways with him?

Did Adam Scott cause Tiger Woods to split with Steve Williams?

After their dominating success together, many wondered why Woods and Williams split up. It happened after the 2011 AT&T National when Woods was sidelined due to an injury. During this time, Williams decided to caddie for Australian golfer Adam Scott. Woods hasn’t talked about the reason behind their split. However, in 2015, Williams talked about how Woods fired him and said, “Adam heard Tiger pull out and wondered where I was. I called Tiger about it, and he said, ‘No problem.’ After some thought, though, he didn’t agree with it. Tiger changed his mind. Well, I’d already told Adam I would be there.”

Williams wasn’t ready for what was about to come, as he further revealed, “I wasn’t prepared to call Adam up and say I couldn’t do it. I’m a man of my word. I had no idea I was going to get fired over it. I also hadn’t worked a lot.” However, after the US Open, Woods told Williams he no longer had a job and was fired.
