With the first session of the Solheim Cup done and dusted, Team USA holds a great edge so far. Looking at the pairings, it feels as though the combinations have not worked out so well for the European team.

Speaking of the pairing decisions ahead of the session, the captains of the two teams discussed this in a press conference recently. The questions they faced explored the thought process that went into finalizing the pairs that would play the morning foursomes today.

The captains spoke about the difficult task of choosing four players to sit in the first session. They had to go with four pairs for the morning session. Stacy Lewis said that her focus leaned toward the playing eight and not on the sitting four. Suzann Pettersen said her list was ready long back.

“I didn’t even look at who was sitting, to be honest.” She reiterated how she was least worried about making four people sit. “It was more just what are my best four options.”

From the way she answered, Lewis had quite a relaxed journey in deciding the final eight that would step into the tee boxes this morning. The picks have borne fruit, as her team strided with a whitewash in the morning foursomes.

The US team captain sounded like she had been thinking a lot. However, it didn’t seem to be the same case with her European counterpart.

The European team captain Suzann Pettersen started off by saying, “I feel like I’ve had these four pairings down on paper for quite a few months now.” She revealed that her whole attention was on which order the pairs would go into the tee box.

Speaking of the strengths of the competing teams, Pettersen said both teams this year have so many great players. She explained how all the players can’t be on the course all the time. “There are only so many that gets to play each session.”

She concluded the discussion with how it’s great to have both experienced players and rookies out there. She felt the combinations would help the rookies get the hang of it and give them a feel of the game.

Seeing how the morning session went, one would agree that the US team’s focus on getting the best pairs out has worked out well so far. This doesn’t mean that the US team can get complacent, however, as the battle has just begun.
