Lilia Vu: A rising star or a flash in the pan? What's your take on her career?

Lilia Vu is among the best young golfers on the LPGA Tour. The 26-year-old attended the University of California, where she completed her degree in Political Science and played on the collegiate golf team. She was introduced to golf by her father, Douglas Vu, who has been her coach ever since she started playing. It was after winning the Arnold Palmer Cup in France in 2018 on behalf of the U.S. team that she earned a spot on the LPGA Tour.

The American professional turned pro in 2019 and thought she had already accomplished her dreams. But little did she know, it was just the beginning. Lilia Vu ended up missing the cut in eight of her first nine events, including a T72 finish at the LOTTE Championship. That was when she realized that the journey had just started.

It has been five years since she began her journey into the professional world of golf, and there is no doubt that Lilia Vu has come a long way, dealing with the highs and lows of her professional golfing career.

1. 2023 US Women’s Open

At the 2023 U.S. Women’s Open, Lilia Vu opened the round with a score of 79, which was already a disappointing 9-over. As she moved on to the second round of the Women’s Major with hopes of improvement, the course did not work out in her favor. Vu ended up carding a 12-over 82 on Friday, giving her the worst performance of her entire golfing career. Unsurprisingly, she settled for a total score of 17-over after two rounds, tying with amateur Milagros Chaves. Both became part of the group of players who missed the cut after the Friday round at Pebble Beach Golf Links.

2. 2019 ShopRite LPGA Classic presented by Acer

Lilia Vu entered the ShopRite LPGA Classic with back-to-back missed cuts, and of course, it was her debut year on the professional tour. Lexi Thompson, who won the tournament that year, finished with a 12-under, while Lilia Vu was 24 strokes behind her, nowhere close to the winning spot. She opened the Thursday round with a 10-over 80. This round was followed by a comparatively better one on Friday, where she shot a 4-over 74. Nonetheless, it was not enough. Lilia Vu ended up missing another cut in her opening season.

3. KPMG Women’s PGA Championship

Lilia Vu missed four cuts last season, despite also having four wins. However, it was the missed cuts that went terribly for her. After missing the cut at the U.S. Women’s Open, she consecutively missed the cut at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship in 2023. Both performances were among her worst. The American professional carded a 72 and a 76 in the first two rounds, accumulating a score of 148. She had a disappointing 12-over finish.

While these might be some of the worst finishes in her career, Lilia Vu has also delivered some record-breaking performances. 1. CME Group Tour Championship

Lilia Vu took home a whopping $250K after completing her four rounds at the CME Group Tour Championship. Although she did not win and finished with a solo fourth, there is no doubt that she gave her best performance in that tournament. Vu had scores of 70-66-66-65. Had it not been for her even-par opening round, she would have had a better score at the end. Nonetheless, she came out with a victorious 21-under finish, which still marks the best score of her career so far.

2. The Annika driven by Gainbridge at Pelican

The Annika driven by Gainbridge at Pelican took place right before the tournament where Lilia Vu delivered her best performance. This was the fourth and final victory of the 2023 season, and she also took home a whopping $488K and 500 CME Points as the winner. Lilia Vu shot all under-par rounds (67-66-62-66) and secured a 19-under finish with a three-stroke victory, defeating Azahara Munoz and Alison Lee, who tied for second place.

Lilia Vu is all set to make her third appearance at the Solheim Cup later this month. She qualified automatically based on her 2024 performance and will be representing the Stars and Stripes.
