Is Charley Hull's smoking habit a distraction or a necessary stress reliever for her Solheim Cup performance?

Charley Hull is pretty much the John Daly of the LPGA Tour. Her weapon for having a good game on the golf course is neither a driver nor a wedge—it’s a smoke. While the British golfer is often seen smoking at almost every tournament, be it the Majors or an event on the LPGA Tour, she was barred from doing so in August in Paris.

While she was competing to win a medal for her home country at the Olympics, she was not seen smoking at Le Golf National because of a rule put in place by the committee. As per the spectator information, smoking is prohibited at venues except in designated smoking areas. While she was last seen smoking at the AIG Women’s Open later in August, it looks like Hull will once again be deprived of her habit.

The official website of the Solheim Cup recently shared the list of prohibited items on the course for both spectators and players. While cigarettes and lighters were not mentioned directly, it stated that fireworks/explosives are banned from the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club. Additionally, it also stated that any materials that constitute unauthorized advertising/promotions are not allowed.

Cigarettes pretty much fall under both categories. However, since there is no direct mention of a no-smoking venue like in Paris, a lot of it depends on the organizers as well. It remains up to Hull to find out whether she will truly be able to smoke or if it is banned.

But the question is, why does Charley Hull need to smoke on the course? The 28-year-old golfer was asked about her habit ahead of the 2024 Olympics, and here’s what she said about it.

Smoking helps Charley Hull relax on the course

At the pre-tournament press conference in Paris, Charley Hull was asked about being famous on the Internet because of smoking. She stated that she barely uses her social media platforms and has not checked them for the past five or six months. Her agent handles the PR part while she completely focuses on her game. But further into the conversation, she also added that she does smoke on the course, but she wouldn’t be doing it at the Olympics.

When asked if that would affect her game in any way, she stated that smoking is what keeps her calm. “Yeah, I think it will. Because it relaxes me a little bit. But it is what it is.” She was right indeed. Hull ended up scoring a 1-over, finishing at a T27 with Linn Grant at the international event. While Le Golf National was among the venues that prohibited smoking, Robert Trent Jones Golf Club just has a list of prohibited items.
