Despite the roller-coaster ride over the past decades, Tiger Woods’ golf ability has never come under the scanner. Indeed, the fifteen-time major championship winner was a force to reckon with, which makes him the undisputable GOAT in his domain.

But what about his grand status outside of golf? Does Woods still qualify as the greatest athlete of all time? Ironically, his children don’t agree, reasons for which have come out in the open after soccer legend Lionel Messi’s sensational move to MLS side Inter Miami.

The choice between Woods and Messi over the title of the world’s greatest athlete is a tough one. Both have reached unscalable peaks in their careers and have had a profound impact on the younger generation.

However, it seems like the soccer player has won the hearts of Woods’ own. Back in 2015, the golf legend and his children were asked a similar question – would they rather be their dad on the golf course, or Argentine soccer star Lionel Messi on the pitch?

The interviewer wasn’t kept waiting as both of Woods’ children, Sam and Charlie, replied, “Messi.” Furthermore, to add salt to the wounds, the now-14-year-old Charlie said, “He’s playing,” as an ode to Woods’ then-back injury, which forced him to opt out of the year’s Hero World Challenge.

The young kids were aged 6 and 8 during the time of the interview. They might have matured opinions now. However, with Messi’s arrival in the States imminent, he clearly triumphs over Woods in the money game.

While the figure is still a sizable one, it doesn’t involve a major addition to his contract. If early reports are to be believed, Messi will earn a share of Adidas merchandise sales and Apple streaming revenue pertaining to the MLS.

Regarded as one of the most popular athletes on the planet, Messi also endorses several brands and companies. He made around $65 million in off-field earnings last year while being only second to long-time rival Cristiano Ronaldo in social media followers.

The numbers dwarf the annual earnings of golf legend Woods. Estimated to be worth over a billion by ‘Forbes’, the 47-year-old made $75 million in earnings last year, which came almost entirely from his sponsorship deals.
