‘So Good Pops’: Teary Robert MacIntyre’s Dad Becomes Fans’ Real MVP at Canadian Open After Son’s Breakthrough

Robert MacIntyre is your 2024 RBC Canadian Open champion! The PGA Tour rookie carded the last par putt from 1 1/2 feet to hoist the trophy in Hamilton Golf & Country Club. It was his 45th start on the PGA Tour and he did it with his father, Dougie MacIntyre by his side. After the incredible victory, the two were left emotional as they couldn’t have imagined winning together on the PGA Tour.

After all, MacIntyre’s father was the last-minute caddie for the Oban native. Before the RBC Canadian Open started, homesick MacIntyre dialed his home at 8 on a Saturday night. When Bob asked his father to be a caddie, he thought about how he had to be at work the next morning. Regardless, he was on the flight to Ontario the next morning.

In the same interview with CBS, Dougie was speechless as he said choking with tears, “Unbelievable, I’m a grass cutter”. But now he had a part in his son’s maiden victory on the PGA Tour. It was truly a hearty moment for the father and son duo from Oban, Scotland, and for the people watching the two celebrate it. Kyle Porter of CBS shared a still from the interview on X and declared Dougie’s emotional statement as “an all time quote.”

Many others shared their perspective on this exemplary victory of the Scots duo. The golf world soaked in on this vulnerable moment from the MacIntyre’s and while the victory was still fresh, the interview made them the fans of the father and son.

The golf world appreciates Robert MacIntyre’s father!

When was the last time a father on the bag with his son won on the PGA Tour? A hard recollection to make. While last year Nick Taylor’s victory broke the Canadian crowd, this year it was the teary-eyed speech from Dougie MacIntyre. There was something special to watch him take it all in and one can rarely find the purest moment like the MacIntyres shared. One fan just loved the interaction as they said, “Find something more wholesome & authentic than this moment today … Search all day & you won’t find one … Congrats to @robert1lefty & his dad being on the bag for the 1st @PGATOUR !” 

Robert MacIntyre was the second DP World Tour graduate after Mathieu Pavon to win on the PGA Tour in 2024. It was truly amusing to see him chart the leaderboard but what made it extra special was, that he gets to do it with his father. It was inspirational for this golf enthusiast as they admiringly said, “This was really cool to watch. Son winning tournament with his dad on the bag who stepped in at the last minute to caddie for him.” 

When Dougie MacIntyre choked during his interview with CBS, it was not just him crying, the whole of the golf world was left emotional. It was a sweet moment seeing the father who taught MacIntyre the game of golf, now be a part of the triumph. It also made this fan tear up, they commented, “It’s been a while since I’ve cried when someone won a golf tournament – this was pretty emotional to watch @RBCCanadianOpen.” 

Even the world #3 player, Rory McIlroy could not take away Bob’s lead at the RBC Canadian Open. It was just an upward trajectory since he took the lead on day two of the event. Probably because his father was there to guide him through and this fan loved the pair conquering the Hamilton G&CC together. They relayed, “Love it. Have played Hamilton GC knowing how hard that track is and how hard it is to win – that was a fabulous moment for a Dad and his son. Awesome.” While this user just loved MacIntyre’s father through and through. As a word of appreciation to Caddie for his son urgently and then leading him to victory, this fan applauded Dougie, saying, “So good pops.”
