Smoking darts and still swinging—Does Joanne Carner redefine what it means to be a sports legend?

Golf enthusiasts have varying opinions about many aspects, and this remains true when it comes to smoking! Some view it as a harmless habit, while others see it as a health risk. And recently, a post by NUCLR Golf has sent the fans into a frenzy. The post had 85-year-old, JoAnne Carner smoking at the U.S. Senior Women’s Open.

The post was captioned, “JoAnne Carner is teeing it up in the U.S. Senior Women’s Open this week at the age of 85. Nicknamed ‘Big Mama’ and still smoking cigarettes”. It seems like ‘Big Mama’ really does know how to draw a crowd! After trying to quit the habit countless times, the 43-time LPGA winner found herself in the same pit. Now, at her 50th USGA championship, Carner has only one goal, to make the cut at the U.S. Senior Women’s Open. Even after five attempts, Carner has not been able to achieve it, she said, I haven’t made it yet”. But fans cannot stop talking about the golfer’s smoking.

The two-time Women’s U.S. Open Winner is not the only female golfer with this habit, yes you guessed it right! Charley Hull, known for golfing skills and smoking habits, got some heat earlier this year for the same. Not only Hull but John Daly has also been seen smoking on the greens over the years. However, that is not the case with Carner.

Fans comment on JoAnne Carner smoking

Fans went wild for the 85-year-old golf legend’s unapologetic smoking habit! Despite the sport’s pressure on physical fitness and guidance towards a healthy body, Carner’s carefree attitude towards smoking has won over the crowd. Hardest sh*t I ever seen today”, said a fan. When it’s likely for fans to get upset over golfer’s smoking habits, it was surprising to see that they could find it cool. Don’t believe us? Well, now you will.

One fan under the post was not afraid of wording their takes on Carner smoking and commented, “Coolest lady in golf”. Another fan commented, “I LOVE that she’s doing this!!  I’m praying she makes the cut!!”. It will be like a personal feat for each fan if the golfer manages to make the cut as she has been trying to make it for the last five years.

And then one fan mockingly said, “This is what Charley Hull will look like in 5 years.” And this is not the first time fans have taken a jab at Hull for her smoking habits. Hull was last seen smoking at the U.S. Women’s Open and the golfer referred to it as minding her own business. One fan said, “Awesome legend”. And she indeed is.  With 43 tournament wins under her belt, she lives up to her nickname ‘Big Mama’.

She also won eight USGA championships and received several awards, including the Bob Jones Award. The most amazing part, she was inducted into the LPGA Hall of Fame and the World Golf Hall of Fame in the same year, 1982. So, are you rooting for her to make the cut in the current tournament?
