LIV Golf has always faced a lot of backlash for going against the tradition of the sport. The Saudi-based league has changed the format of the game to try and make it more exciting. However, even during Greg Norman’s term, LIV Golf was never able to outgrow from the PGA Tour’s shadow. Fortunately, they have been able to attain extremely loyal players who actively promote the league.
Phil Mickelson and Bryson DeChambeau have always spoken up about LIV Golf. Even Jon Rahm has been quite vocal about how LIV Golf has helped him. More recently, another top golfer also shared his views on LIV Golf while addressing its critics.

What did Harold Varner III have to say about LIV Golf?
Harold Varner III has been a professional golfer for about 13 years. During this period, he has had his fair share of experience in the PGA Tour and the DP World Tour. During this period, he has managed to win one European Tour event. It’s fair to say that he has not been that successful in the USA and Europe. So it’s no surprise that he was ready to accept the big opportunity to join LIV Golf as soon as he got the opportunity.
The 4Aces GC player has had a great time in LIV Golf. His team has topped the leaderboard in two of the three seasons so far. He is also able to learn a lot from the team’s captain and two-time major winner, Dustin Johnson. In an interview on the 5 Clubs on YouTube, Varner was questioned about his time in the PIF-backed promotion and what he had to say to its critics. When asked why people don’t like LIV Golf, he replied, “I think the biggest mistake is that people don’t come see it”.
Explaining his statement, Varner added, “You don’t know what you don’t like until you see it”. He suggests that LIV Golf will become a lot more acceptable once fans actually start watching it. He further stated, “I think golf is changing. It’s obviously taking forever to play. People are in a position where ‘you can like what you like, but don’t judge me for what I like'”. Varner mentions how it’s all golf at the end of the day and the fans have a lot of variety to watch now.
To end the conversation, Dustin Johnson’s teammate added, “You just appreciate everything. Take it as it is. If you don’t like it, just shut up and go watch what you like”. The LIV Golf pro clearly believes that the league shouldn’t be pushed down the throat of the fans.

LIV Golfers’ response to the critics
Back in 2023, it was Harold Varner III himself who was in the limelight for leaving the PGA Tour. He and LIV Golf were criticized for their betrayal of Jay Monahan & co.’s league. But Asian Tour pro; Scott Hend came to their defense with a timely tweet. He said, “I thought the abusive tweets to @livgolf_league Players had almost stopped… That’s until I’ve been reading some aimed at @HV3_Golf… Some sh*t individuals still squeezing out from underneath the floorboards I see….. #GolfLife #JustSayn #GiveItARest #Knobs”. The pro golfer was clearly ticked off by the kind of heat LIV Golf and Varner were receiving.
More recently, Tyrrell Hatton came into the spotlight for his comments about joining LIV Golf. The English aggressor said, “I feel like I went about it the right way,” as he talked about being able to play in the DP World Tour and LIV Golf simultaneously. He also mentioned that he is enjoying “the best of both worlds” by representing the two leagues. Hatton is clearly not missing the PGA Tour one bit.
