‘Shouldn’t Change What He’s Done in the Game’: Jon Rahm Expresses Concern Over the Tarnishing Legacy of Sergio Garcia

The start of LIV Golf has left a wide chasm between fans and players. Many players left the tour to defect to the other side, and this created huge controversies and feuds between players. While many took sides and lashed out at each other, Jon Rahm took an entirely different stand altogether. Despite rejecting LIV Golf’s offer, the Spaniard, unlike many other members of the PGA Tour, does not loathe the members of the Saudi-backed side. He even went so far as to stand up for Sergio Garcia’s legacy.

Jon Rahm backs up Sergio Garcia’s accomplishments

In a recent press conference with Keith Pelley in Dubai, Jon was asked if he thought Garcia’s legacy was tarnished due to him joining LIV golf. Rahm’s answer was extremely realistic and bittersweet. “I hope not,” he said, and then went on to add that there is always bound to be “some division.”

The Spanish golfer said that the true fans wouldn’t care where he played. He said that the fact that Sergio Garcia now plays for LIV Golf does not undo his accomplishments. He stated, “I don’t think they care, really, where he plays. Some of them might but most of them I don’t really think they care. It still shouldn’t change what he’s done in the game.”

“What he’s done in the Ryder Cup, European Tour, PGA TOUR shouldn’t be affected by where he decides to play golf,” he stated. Despite playing for the PGA, Jon clearly does not belittle the accomplishments of the golfers who left. He believes their efforts deserves recognition, no matter what league.

In the press conference, Rahm also stated that he believes those players will not be able to make a “positive impact with their legacy right now,” but that whatever the players have already accomplished should not be affected. When it comes to the Ryder Cup, the world No. 5 does not share the same opinion as the likes of Rory McIlroy.

Contrarily, he stated that defected players should compete in the Ryder Cup. Jon Rahm believes that the Ryder Cup is a competition not between tours and leagues but between nations. Hence he thinks it should be the strongest of both squads regardless of where they play. He said, “The Ryder Cup is not the PGA Tour and European Tour against LIV – it’s Europe versus the US, period.”
