Can Adam Sandler still swing like Happy Gilmore, or is Shooter McGavin right about him looking rough?

Happy Gilmore’s nemesis strikes again online! The beloved classic, ‘Happy Gilmore,’ prepares to tee off into a new generation. Adam Sandler’s iconic character brought golf to the masses with his unorthodox swing. His fiery temper, however, ignited a passion in fans that’s still burning strong today. As the stage is set for a new chapter in the movie saga, fans eagerly await the next chapter in the epic rivalry.

But what’s reigniting the flames of competition this time around? None other than Shooter McGavin himself. Christopher McDonald, who brought Shooter McGavin to life, has taken to X to throw some serious shade at Happy Gilmore. And the tweet got everyone talking.

The post said, “Might be time to put the ice cream down and pick up a golf club, Gilmore. I can’t wait to wipe the floor with you next month.” The tweet also hints that the rivalry between Happy and Shooter is about to heat up once again. This got fans buzzing. However, the tweet came just days after Adam Sandler revealed on The Tonight Show (August 20) that production for ‘Happy Gilmore 2’ is set to start soon.

The seeds for a sequel were sown in 2021. That time Sandler expressed interest in revisiting Happy Gilmore on the “Dan Patrick Show.” At the time, he hinted that he’d be open to the project if the right opportunity arose. Little did fans know, that spark would eventually ignite into a full-fledged sequel.

Christopher McDonald shared a personal conversation with Sandler in March this year, and fans cracked up. “I saw Adam about two weeks ago and he says to me, ‘McDonald, you’re going to love this. I said, ‘What?’ He says, ‘How about that’ and he shows me the first draft of ‘Happy Gilmore 2.’” McDonald then expressed, “I thought, ‘Well, that would be awesome.’ So it’s in the works. Fans demand it!” giving a nod to the much-awaited sequel.

With the production set to start in September, it’s not just the cast that’s excited—the fans are eagerly anticipating its release too. They are reliving the original’s magic. Enthusiasts shared their favorite moments and quotes from the movie that has become a cultural phenomenon.

One of the most iconic moments in Happy Gilmore was the battle over the coveted gold jacket at the Waterbury Open. Happy’s victory left Shooter humiliated, sparking a hilariously intense rivalry that culminated in a physical altercation when Shooter tried to steal the jacket. A fan recalled this moment with a cheeky comment. He said, Shooter, hopefully, you’re finally healed enough to play you seemed touch and go for a while after you attempted to steal his gold jacket.” The callback to Shooter’s injury after the altercation is a brilliant nod to the film’s comedic climax, where Shooter’s attempt to snatch victory (and the jacket) literally backfired on him.

“i can’t believe he’s a professional golfer.  i think he should be working in the snack bar, joked one fan in response to Shooter McGavin’s tweet, referencing Adam Sandler holding ice cream instead of golf clubs. This lighthearted jab plays into the goofy, carefree nature of Gilmore’s character. As fans have always loved Happy’s down-to-earth, everyman appeal, this joke reinforces that image. The follow-up comment from another fan, “Happy lookin’ rough,” keeps the playful teasing alive, poking fun at Sandler’s relaxed appearance with ice cream in hand. The lighthearted banter captures the playful spirit of the Happy Gilmore fandom.

One fan quipped, “He’s not a golfer, he’s a hockey player!” a perfect callback to one of the central themes of the movie. In the film, Happy’s golf swing is powered by his experience in hockey. And despite the sport’s differences, his unconventional approach works wonders on the golf course. However, Shooter McGavin’s disdain for Happy’s rough, hockey-inspired playstyle was a major plot point in the original.

Another fan cleverly remarked, “I like how you want to beat him at his best so there’s no excuses.” This speaks to Shooter McGavin’s character, who, despite his arrogance, always wanted to prove himself as the best golfer. The comment’s focus on wanting to beat someone at their best highlights the competitive edge that defines Shooter’s character. This moment mirrors the final battle at the Tour Championship in the original film.
