There is always an interesting story behind a golfer becoming a glorious name. And today, we talk about Greg Norman and the story behind his introduction to the sport that he loves. In the case of famous golfers like Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods, it was their fathers who walked them down the road of golf. But for Norman, it was his mother. In 2006, the LIV Golf chief talked to TODAY and narrated the unknown story of his love for golf and how it all started.
Greg Norman’s mother: The wonder woman in his life
Norman’s mother, Toini Norman, was an excellent athlete. She played golf for many years, even before the pro golfer was born. He had golf in his blood, but it needed a nudge to gush it through his veins. At fifteen, ‘the great white shark’ of golf did not have friends and was lonely. But one fine day, his mother invited him to “play a quick nine holes of golf.“

Golf did not entice Norman, but his mother believed he had a “basis of a reasonable swing.” He caddied for his mother once and watched her play golf. As a result, he asked himself, “She made golf look easy, and as I was fairly self-confident with my athletic abilities, I figured, If Mum can do it, why can’t I?”
At that very moment, he decided to give golf a try. The LIV golf commissioner reminisced his first whacking of golf balls and said, “A few went straight, but most were poorly hit.”
Concluding his story, the major championship winner said, “And that’s how I was introduced to golf: a simple invitation from my mother.” However, things were hard for him. At that time, golf balls used to be very expensive. It was imported from the US to Australia. While trying his hands at golf, he hit the ball, which got stuck in the pandanus tree. He must have learned another lesson after his story of never taking shortcuts.
