‘She Gave Me a Bit of Credit But..’ – Days After Being an Inspiration For the LPGA Tour Win, the 3X Major Champion Hails Leona Maguire’s Diligence

It is indeed a great gesture to praise an athlete who has inspired you to do better or has helped you learn any special skill pertaining to the game. What makes the given credit even better is the acceptance and acknowledgment of the praise. This has recently happened in the golf world, and it is nothing less than a warm and content moment of sheer appreciation for fellow golfers. 

The young LPGA star, Leona Maguire, recently praised the 3X major champion who inspired her to hit the winning shots and helped her claim her second LPGA Tour victory. And now the 51-year-old is singing high praises of his fellow Irish golfer.

PGA Tour veteran bestows Leona Maguire with appreciation 

After emerging victorious in Meijer LPGA Classic last week, the young Irish golfer is chasing her career’s first major title in New Jersey. Her inspiration, Padraig Harrington is defending his Dicks Sporting Goods Open title.

After the two-time LPGA Tour winner won at Blythefield Country Club in Michigan, she thanked the 2022 Senior US Open winner for teaching her some shots that helped her win. She shared that instead of Rory McIlroy, who is an inspiration to a lot of golfers, she got inspired by Harrington during her visit to him last summer before the British Open. Now, Harrington is giving the due welcome and praise to her. 

Talking about his expectation from their interaction, he said, “I just wanted to see Leona’s game.” He shared that when she came over to his house, they played a few shots together. Together. Harrington praised the LPGA star and said,  “She’s really good. She has a really good short game.”  The golf veteran also called her a “hard worker.” 

Talking about how he helped her, he said that he shared some of the shots he had learned in his career. He shared that it was not his lesson that helped her win, but Maguire’s practice and how she made those shots that helped her secure the win. Concluding his praise for the young star, he said, “Fair play to her. She gave me a bit of credit but it really is all down on her.”

Why did Maguire seek Harrington’s help? 

Reminiscing his old memories with Maguire, the three-time major winner shared that he used to meet the golfer and her sister at sports awards when she was 13 years old, and used to offer her advice about the game. 

Sharing about how Maguire contacted him in 2022, he said it all happened because of his caddie, Dermot Byrne. Maguire’s caddie suggested that she should talk to Harrington before the Open and get to learn about a few tips. And thus, a bond ensued!
