The Shaw Charity Classic, one of the most celebrated charitable golf events, is on the horizon and our PGA Tour Champions are ready to raise money for the youth of Alberta. The one and only Canadian event on the PGA Tour Champions calendar is hosted by The Patron Group, a collective of Business owners. The event was initiated in 2012 by the late billionaire Clay Riddell, founder and former CEO of Paramount Resources
This year, the tournament is scheduled for August 18-20 at the Canyon Meadows Golf and Country Club. Here is the lowdown on the event particularly in regard to the top five contenders and the venue.
Which golfers are likely to make an appearance at the 2023 Shaw Charity Classic?

The final field for the event consists of 74 immensely talented golfers to tackle the 72-par course, as per the PGA Tour. Here are the top players who are most likely to win the title:
- Stewart Cink – The 50-year-old golfer, who qualified though the PGA TOUR Points List, was recently appointed US Vice Captain for the upcoming Ryder Cup in Italy. He is a relatively recent addition to the senior tour. Cink’s experience and prolific skills on the course make him one of the favorites to win this season.
- Miguel Angel Jimenez – The Spanish legend of the golf courses qualified for the event with his standing on the Schwab Cup Points List from last year. The 59-year-old veteran has always displayed immense talent. His brilliant attitude toward the game makes him a strong contender for the 2023 SCC in Calgary.
- Jerry Kelly – Defending Champion Jerry Kelly won the tournament last year with 9-under at the end of the final round 3 and took home $352,500. This year, Kelly qualified with his Schwab Cup Points and fans are eager to see if he will once again take the title at the charity event.
- Fred Couples – The veteran golfer, who has numerous wins and top 10 finishes to his name, qualified for the Shaw Charity Classic with his Schwab Cup Points Standing. The 63-year-old pro has a remarkable history of capturing unique wins, which makes him one of the top runners for the SCC 2023 title.
- Steven Alker – The Kiwi golfer has won six tournaments on the PGA Tour Champions. He triumphed at the season-long 2022 Charles Schwab Cup. He has been in good form in recent months and that’s what makes him a strong contender.
The total prize money for this year’s Shaw Charity Classic is $2.4 million but the event is set to raise a lot more for the youth of Alberta, thanks to the organizers of the Patron Group.

The spectacular course at Canyon Meadows
The private country club that hosts professional golf tournaments is one of the highly sought-after membership venues in Calgary, Alberta. The golf course features eight par-4s, five par 3s, and five par 5s on the 1st, 4th, 11th, 15th, and 18th holes.
