Despite setbacks, Shane Lowry's fan support is unwavering—does he deserve a Ryder Cup spot?

Shane Lowry made his first appearance in the Ryder Cup in 2021. He was part of the European squad at Whistling Straits as a captain’s pick. In 2023, he made his second appearance under Luke Donald’s captaincy in Rome, being part of the winning team. The Irishman currently holds a record of 2-2-2. However, it looks like making it to the team for the 2025 Ryder Cup is going to be a distant dream for him.

Nonetheless, he has had an average run this season and has also managed to set a record. He did receive a shoutout and a lot of appreciation. Shane Lowry appeared in 20 events this season and missed the cut only in two of them (The American Express and Wyndham Championship). The 37-year-old PGA Tour pro also bagged eleven top-25 finishes, including his win at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans paired with Rory McIlroy.

Having earned about $6 million in official money this year, according to Golf Digest, Shane Lowry ended the season with 359 consecutive holes. He made no three-putts the entire season. Golf Digest shared the record on their official X account and wrote, “Shane Lowry’s putter had a season.”

In 2015, Freddie Jacobson opened the second round of the Zurich Classic with a three-putt, which was his first in three months of the PGA Tour season. He set a new PGA Tour record by going 542 holes without a three-putt, surpassing the previous record held by European team captain Luke Donald (483 holes).

While there is still a gap to cover, Shane Lowry is among the very few players who have come close to Jacobson’s record. One fan commented, “Got a ways to go to beat Freddie Jacobsen’s record”.

Despite the 2024 record set by Shane Lowry, he ranks 107th on the list of total strokes gained in putting. His field average is -0.076, resulting in his SG: Putting meeting -4.567 over a total of 61 recorded rounds, which is another shocker. In response, one fan commented, “Yet finished 107th in strokes gained putting, the stat that matters to being competitive in tournaments”.
