From Open agony to Olympic glory—Is Shane Lowry the ultimate comeback king?

No, not just of golf, but Lowry has other responsibilities at the Paris Olympics. He had a massive heartbreak at the Royal Troon less than a week ago, but the Olympics committee had other plans. Along with Sarah Lavin, the Irish athlete Shane Lowry was just announced to be the flag-bearer of Ireland.

Lowry had been faring well for the first 36 holes at the 152nd Open Championship. He was even at the top of the list for a prolonged time. Lowry had brought about such critical points where the audience believed that he would ultimately get the Claret Jug. But things went downhill in the third round. Unlike his other 5-under 66 and 2-under 69 in the first and second round, Lowry went 6 over par. Even with a final round of 68, the Irish golfer could not cover the distance. After such an upsetting Sunday, Lowry was surprised and rewarded in the Olympics quite instantly with the honor of a flag-bearer.

The 37-year-old golfer has been extremely patriotic throughout his life. And so he claimed again after getting the opportunity to represent his country at the opening event. According to the Irish Times, he said, “It’s a huge honour for me and my family.” Then Lowry continued to say how one would not even dream about something like such an honor as a kid. He proudly revealed, “So it is something I’m not sure you’d even dream about as a kid because it’s so far out there that it does not seem achievable. But to get to do something like that is a huge honor for me.”

“Anybody that knows me knows how patriotic I am and how much I love Ireland and how much I love my country,” announced Lowry. He further recalled how he always wears the Irish flag with great pride. Being able to bear this very symbol of his nation has thus heightened his sense of nationalism. For him and his family. It is a once-in-a-lifetime moment that he said he will always remember.

Much like how he will remember what he is about to do for Ireland, his home country has already done something for him. What is it?

It was one winning announcement back in 2019, and five years later, the winner was again celebrated. No, Shane Lowry has not won this year’s Claret Jug, but he will stand the test of time, at least in his homeland. This Irish golfer hoisted the winning cup of the Open Championship when it was played in his home country, at Royal Portrush Golf Club in County Antrim. He gave them a win back then, and now, as Lowry is about to represent them in the Olympics, the Open venue gives him a return gift.

Right after Xander Schauffele won the 152nd Open Cup, the Open Championship’s official Facebook handle dropped the countdown for the next Open. With the calendar scheduled exactly in a year, they declared the upcoming venue and one golf star to particularly look out for. They wrote, “The countdown begins. One year until The Open returns to Royal Portrush.”

Along with that, the Open released a time-lapse video of a mural. It turned a gray wall into one with a shining silver Claret Jug, and slowly, it was built up to have Lowry’s face on it. The Open also wrote the same in its caption: “A new mural celebrating Shane Lowry’s iconic win has been unveiled.” Yes, Shane Lowry will return to his home course again after 6 years since his win there, and naturally, his homeland needed to give him a huge shout-out. Although the mural celebrated Lowry’s Open win, the revelation of the mural right before his Paris Games proved to have another boost of support.
